Me and the missus have #pivoted from Athens and have decided on Italy in early October now. I’ve never been before but we plan to go for 8 nights and want to hit Florence and work our way down to Rome and then Naples.
From some research, it looks like there’s plenty to see in Florence and Rome, so we plan to spend 2-3 days in each depending on sites/day trips. Just looking at the above convos, @Jesseviolin do you reckon Naples can be discovered in a day or two? I plan to go to Pompeii/Mt. Vesuvius, which will take a good day. Do you reckon I can visit the places you recommended to Jakey above in a day?
Thanks mate. Have you been before? There looks to be a lot of stuff to see there and I wanted to visit San Gimignano, which I think will likely be a day trip thing.
I think it hinges on the volume of sites/trips to do in these centres and close to them. So San Gimignano is roughly 1.5/2 hours away from Florence. I could possibly add in some more sites which will dictate whether it’s a 2 day or a 3 day thing, if that makes sense.
Florence is good but it’s worth spending longer in Rome as there’s a lot more to see.
It’s busy and there are queues for the popular tourist attractions like the Colosseum but if you like history, it doesn’t get much better Rome.
Thanks for your input mate! Looks like there is plenty to do in Rome indeed and I think and it’s probably a place we’ll stay the longest in because of that.
Ah you are making day trips to Tuscany. In that case, it makes sense.
I couldn’t go to Florence but based on my research, you don’t need more than 2 days to check out Florence as a city. You can definitely spend more time especially if you are adding Tuscan villages into the mix. There are some nice Thermal baths as well for you to consider
I suggested spending just 2 days in Florence because you also wanted to visit Rome & Naples in an 8 day trip.
I have been to Rome twice last season and in my first visit, we walked every street of Rome for 8 or so days and still felt like there was a lot to do.
If you are doing day trips like Gimignano, I suggest reducing the plan to 2 cities.
Awesome, that’s really appreciated @Trion and gives me a better idea of how to plan some of these days.
I won’t be naive in thinking I will see everything in 8 days as I’ve read that Italy has a lot to offer. I’m more of a greenery person myself compared to the beaches and seeing some of the vistas in the Tuscan countryside really appeals to me.
I need to pitch the ultimate must see items to my wife next and see which way the pendulum swings in favour for them I think.
I did September last year thinking it’d be cooler and apparently it was hotter in September than it had been in August. It’s just insane how hot it got I went on a boat party and spend half the time downstairs in the air conditioning. Soon as the sun went down we could enjoy it but it was ballistic b
I’ll never do any month other than October - April again lol
Good choices everything depends on what type of tourist you are really. For me personally what trion recommends is possible but you would be dashing about. I like to take my time and the places you want to see you really want to take in to appreciate everything much like anywhere with a cultural history.
Regarding Naples I think what I recommended to Jakey was a selection of places for a 3/4 day visit and then eating and drinking on top which shouldn’t be rushed lol.
Pompeii and Vesuvio should be two separate days, there’s a lot of walking ,and if you’re taking the train definitely take 2 days.
Isn’t it the case that over there if it hits 50+ then by law then outdoor workers have to be sent home? I bet it very rarely officially goes above 48c over there haha.
On a more relevant note I’m off to Abu Dhabi early Sep, any recommendations is much appreciated. I’ll head to Dubai for a day or 2 aswell I reckon to catch some mates.
Two weeks away from our annual family holiday, when I brave the crowds of Benidorm to visit an amazing model car shop near the beach. I really hate driving through it, but it’s worth it once I’m there.
