Just finished The Village. What an absolute joy that game was. Felt like a kid again gaming, a sweaty palmed nervous kid.

The story itself is fantastic and any fans of the series will not be disappointed, follows 7 very well which in itself was an outstanding return to form. There’s some absolutely delicious fan service while standing on it’s own as it’s own franchise- The Ethan Winter’s story.

In terms of graphics it might be the finiest looking game I’ve ever played, especially the set designs of the Castle Dimitrescu. I went from a doubter to the a firm believer in the power of ray tracing.

I played on the PS5 and this game makes full use of the haptic feedback, when you slash your knife through flesh you can feel the resistance. When firing a gun you shakily try to get each shot of - later you unlock the hair trigger which does exactly what you’d imagine and is reflected in the controller.

Anyone on the fence I can’t help but recommend, I know it’s pricey for a game that last about 10-12 hours but it’s an absolute next generation masterpiece. And you also get a free hero TDM shooter called RE Verse, which will no doubt be average but a nice touch nonetheless.

Finished it today aswell tho it was a good game I just wasn’t scared compared to previous instalments well apart from Benevolent house that’s some fucked up shit.

But overall the game just wasn’t scary compared to RE7 and I put it down to being in a more open map compared to a more claustrophobic settings in previous games.

Also my biggest gripe with the game is

Mia didn’t survive in re7 for me because I chose not to save her then she turns up in this which then kind of nerfes the story experience

7/10

When I was reading about it the developers said that the game wasn’t going to be that scary because people complained 7 was too scary and they couldn’t enjoy it.

Some of parts in Dimitrescu Castle were rather eerie and the Bienviendos part was some Silent Hill/PT shit. I’ve played just about every mainstream horror game I can get my hands on and that is probably one of the most horrifying, unforgettable and thrilling set pieces I’ve played. I enjoyed these segments much more than the action packed latter stages.

Saying that this game didn’t want to be the exact same as RE7 that was never their intention, it feels more like a love letter to Resident Evil 4 in the Winters verse. As for your gripe about Mia, there’s only one decision that’s canon and that’s not Zoe. This is poorly explained, well never really, outside following the lore through external channels.

I made the same decison as you though and I think it was a poor choice but the directors to have one choice aspire to be meaningless. Saying that I adore 7 so I won’t be too hard on this weird plot hole. Resident Evils are usually designed to be replayed to squeeze out every story aspect.

Overall this was very close to a perfect Resident Evil for me, it doesn’t top my list as RE2 and RE 1 Remake are and always will be my favourites but I think it lands beside RE7 if not a little below it. I think this one however speaks more to fans of the entire franchise as it has some broad fan service- while 7 was a much more contained reboot, aimed to bring in a new generation of fans.

@BizzySignal

Finished up Spider-Man PS4 yesterday afternoon. So that’s the full game and all 3 DLCs fully completed, collected every silly little trinket, got every trophy.

One mildly annoying thing is that the final suit I unlocked was the one from the Into The Spiderverse film, unlocked just in time for me to retire the game! @Electrifying very similar vibe to the cartoon suit you mentioned. I hadn’t yet unlocked that suit when you posted about it, but once I did, like you I rarely used other suits. Both that one and the Spiderverse one pop so nicely when set against the more realistic looking game world.

What a game though, absolutely loved it.

I will return to this in maybe six months or so, technically there are 2 trophies left I haven’t got, which are awarded for doing New Game Plus and completing the game on ultimate difficulty.

Oh and I should add as well that I loved the storyline, I thought it was very well done by and large, and kept me fully engaged. I like MJ the reporter-not-model, that meant she could be nicely woven into the game without only being a damsel in distress character. Miles and Aunt May too, no spoilers, but I liked their roles in the plot. I loved that Otto Octavius was essentially a mentor to Peter, and how his relationship with Norman Osborne was so key to the plot.

Not letting myself play Miles Morales for quite a while as that’s my final fix of Spidey madness on the PS4, gotta be disciplined here.

Though I might even dive into New Game Plus right away, cos let’s face it, as if Ultimate difficult will be possible or at all fun if I give myself long enough to forget all the controls and strategies.

What did you think of the twist at the end including Harry and Venom?

I was fine with that, because it was deeply obvious that Harry wasn’t in Europe from the very start of you doing all those research centre side missions lol, so I expected a reveal at some point. It being a Venom thing instead of Green Goblin situ was the true twist, and may upset some purists for obvious reasons, but based on the first game I trust them to make it work and not be shit

Back to the suits thing, I watched a video about the Miles Morales game and they talk about how they slow down the character models frame rate when wearing the Spiderverse film suit, while keeping the usual frame rare for everything else, to make it really stand put from the rest of the game world. I can’t confirm this, but I think they did the same for the Spiderverse suit in this game, and I just love those little details.

The Last of Us Part II on PS5.

Naughty Dog recently upgraded the game to support 4K at a locked 60FPS for the next gen and in just 3-4 hours it’s feeling like the best technical marvel and intense story and gameplay experience I’ve seen on consoles ever.

I’ve just gone past THAT point and now I see what all the fuss and controversy has been about. Hard hitting stuff and a risky AF move to set up the rest of the game.

It’s the one game you can play in front of other people and they can be completely immersed in what’s happening on screen.

I’m ashamed to say I never played the Uncharted series except for the first one which I completed back in the day.

Playing through the Uncharted collection now. Completed U2 and just started U3.

I did end up doing New Game + on Ultimate difficulty just so I had 100% of the Spider-Man trophies. Blasted through it ignoring all the side content as quickly as possible. Piece of piss.

The intention was to move onto The Last of Us Remastered, as the point of buying the PS4 off @SRCJJ was to catch up on the two generations worth of exclusives I’d missed out on, but I saw Far Cry 3 on sale for 3 quid and have ended up starting that over again as I played it back on the 360 yeeeeaaars ago.

Doesn’t even matter that the graphics aren’t as good as other games, it still looks great and it’s a brilliant open world to inhabit. It’s still such a good game. Plus Vaas is obviously great, and this time I appreciate him even more because I’ve seen the actor go onto to portray Nacho so well in Better Call Saul.

Far Cry 3 is one of my favourite games and a near perfect open world experience. Unfortunately I got really bored of the open world genre after that. I much prefer a tighter game experience now, the traveling from mission to mission actually does my head in.

Far Cry 3 was ace though, I’d just shoot myself up with cocaine plants and speed run everywhere.

If anyone hasn’t played it up until now they should definitely check out the Mass Effect legendary edition. All 3 games plus all the DLCs in one game , remade with improvements in graphics, mechanics and gameplay across the board. Possibly one of the greatest gaming trilogies of all time, with one of the greatest stories, lore and worlds if not the greatest.

@Castiel if you want a tighter more story driven game then you can’t go wrong with ME.

That is rather unfortunate, given their prevalence. Single player, open world games are my jam tbh, so it’s great. But I totally get why so many people are bored of them, there are far too many games now with threadbare main campaigns that are set in an open world tht is padded out with repetitive side missions and shit loads of collectibles to give the impression of a rich, deep game world with lots to do. When you strip away the extraneous collectibles, fetch quests, escort missions etc you’re left with something that’s quite lacking.

Luckily for me, I quite like collecting pointless trinkets and using it as an excuse to endlessly explore every inch of an open world, so the prevalence of open world games is great. But I 100% understand why people are a bit sick of it. I love all the Arkham games, but I get why people point to the first game as an example of a game that worked well with more of a linear structure and no open world. I love the later open world games, but Asylum is better in a way for not having an open world. Not every game needs to be open world.

Yeh man I used to be like that but I kind of grew out of the collectible aspects of these games as I got older, I think it’s because I bored myself by doing the fetch stuff too much when I was younger. I genuinely remember driving round in GTA 3 trying to stay road legal, stopping at lights and shit I was so bored. That was before online though and now that it’s a thing I don’t consider side quests to be anything more than filler.

Even games like RDR2 that draw out the story with slow travel becomes a chore to me.

I liked Spiderman but not to the level everyone else seems to it had far too many trivial side quests for me -but for people that enjoy them I can imagine it’s great, but I, as you put well found them a little lacking.

Right with you on Arkham though I don’t know how I’ve played all of them with my absolute hatred of open worlds. Amazaing games, amazing story and brilliant combat. I genuinely feel about them the way people feel about the Spider-Man games. Batman, The Witcher 3 and FfXV probably the only open world I’ve enjoyed in my adult years and it’s all because they put their own unique spin on it.

I really need to give another far Cry a chance but FC4 was pretty horrible as it just re-skinned 3 to a less interesting extent. I also remember playing the first Far Cry which wasn’t open world at all but not survival horror and the 2nd which was a janky prototype demo for open world physics lol. 3rd time really was the charm

Will be my first purchase when I get a PS5

Haha I’ve played them, completely forgot about them, though I don’t consider them open world as much even though they are. The travel in those games is amazing and I loved going from world to world on your spaceship trying to have sex with every crew member who would let you.

I only started to get bored towards the end of the 3rd one but the multiplayer was amazing in it too. ME 1-3 a near perfect franchise.

The travel feels purposeful and the game flows amazingly in regard to its story, very little take item A to point B bullshit fetch quests. More emphasis on the RPG elements and world build. Awesome game.

@BizzySignal one of my dreams for gaming’s next generation is they turn ME into an MMO. I’d sink 100s of hours into something like that.

Yeah sorry my bad I miss read and thought you meant you was generally looking for a tighter more linear experience. Yeah wouldn’t consider ME open world more RPG with some open world elements in the first game. But yeah definitely one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. Can’t believe they haven’t thought of an MMO the world and characters etc… would definitely lend its self to an epic one.

@Cristo i got it on my series x, but haven’t got past the character creation :joy: firstly due to lack of time secondly because of my ocd I been trying to create my self in game, and every time I do my wife will say that don’t look like you or I won’t be happy with it, because something will be off. Wish they had the EA face creator but luckily they added the ME3 character creator so a lot of options to choose from.
