I’m in complete agreement with what you suggest here. All of this can be done. I’m not surprised you have refs coming out and saying VAR should be scrapped. It has exposed the poor standard of refereeing in the PL. The solution is not to scrap VAR but to make it fit for purpose and to ensure that the big decisions in matches are correct.
Which refs said this?
We haven’t reached a point yet where technology is absolutely flawless, so totally relying on VAR ain’t the solution. And the ref are their incompetent selves, so absolutely scrapping VAR may not be solution either.
As things stand, the best solution could be to give each team one or two reviews/contests per game. Use the review unsuccessfully and you lose one. Use it successfully and your review remains intact. Could be the best solution as things stand imo.
Name escapes me atm…but listened to one on TalkSport yesterday morning on my to work who was saying how VAR should be scrapped and how its has made refs worse and undermined them. Absolute nonsense IMO!
Presumably he was a former ref as id imagine current refs aren’t allowed give interviews like that.
Looks like wolves were on their own as clubs voted 19-1 in favour of keeping it.

Lol 19-1
OOOOH, this reminds me of that meeting participant who suggests a stupid point which is politely turned down by everyone. Awkward
Lol
Was an absolutely ludicrous suggestion from the start
you just get reminded of how mind blowingly poor the implementation of this technology has been. boggles the mind. we’ve reached a point where the VAR room are the real refs, the on-field refs are just there to look for bookings and talk to players, they’re encouranged to not make decisions but leave everything to boomers with MS paint in a booth somewhere two minutes later.
and everyone hates the shit out of the whole thing, it ruins moments, and being in the moment is one of the best things about football
it could’ve just been a supportive function, one to give the on-field refs an additional point of view in case they thought they might have missed it you know. oh well, it’s here to stay so we will just have to suffer through this clown show for the forseeable future, perhaps, eventually, it will be in a good place.
They didn’t raise this because they thought it might pass. They raised it to get the articles written and a bit of pressure on PGMOL. I don’t see it as a Wolves thing at all. The clubs wanted this said and this is a high profile way of getting it out there.
-
PGMOL need to invest in better HD VAR cameras and technology that automatically draws lines for offsides and balls out of play on their screen.
-
3 minute rule on VAR decisions for penalties, offsides and goals. If after that amount of time they can’t work out whether the referee was right or wrong, the on-field decision stands.
-
Half and full time foul awards. If upon review it appears there should have been a red card during play, then managers are told before the play restarts, so they can make changes. The player still has to go to the middle of the field to be awarded the card. Add a bit of shame and theatre to it.
-
Retrospective reviews post-match for red card offences and evidence of cheating. No more “getting away with it” EPL publishes a weekly list of offenders.
-
Mic all officials up and put it out there on TV and via an EPL app so fans can listen through an ear-piece. With the exception of VAR discussions which should be broadcast over the stadium speakers.
Pleased that this was the outcome, and although I disagree with Wolves proposal, pleased that they took a stand, as it does reflect a lot of fans views.
Hopefully, the focus going forward will be to make VAR more automated.
When you know it’s not going to pass, why join wolves and put your club even more on the VAR radar for shit decisions?
19-1 doesn’t surprise me, Wolves probably feel they can’t be anymore hard done by from their perspective and at least got the issue on the front page.
I do think there was still merit in this vote. It puts the PGMOL on notice. Whilst abolishment was shot down 19-1, I do think clubs will rethink it if they don’t get their shit together. A new proposal to simplify it to goal line and semi-auto offside could happen if the refs and PGMOL continue to stink the place up.
I must once again complain about the VAR implementation on the Rice decision.
How can the ref be so sure the correct course of action there is a second yellow card for Rice. It all happens so fast and I don’t believe for one second on a rewatch that the decision made would be upheld. Why is the bar clear and obvious error, it completely nullifies the technology.
VAR should never become a crutch for refs but in situations like this they should absolutely be able, if not bloody required, to view the incident again and come to their decision based on facts and not a sense of what went on.
VAR has been an utter failure in the PL.
Completely agree with this. VAR should be able getting the big decisions in the game right. Is it a goal or is it a sending off, irrespective of whether it is a straight red or a second yellow. Referees should be required to rewatch the incident and decide on whether a card is justified. The whole match turned on that single incident. We lost the league last year by 2 points. Decisions like this could cost us the league.
The technology is there to be used, but there seems to be a reluctance to do so, on behalf of the referees and those in charge. This is one area where I might be fully in favour of AI replacing humans. Results should be determined on merit, not on whether the referee fucked up or not on a decision.
Even if it was clear and obvious error var cannot intervene on 2nd yellows, only direct red cards.
Pathetic, horrid implementation of this technology.
There just needs to be a policy or system for refs to verify their decisions at the monitor, something I asked for in yoinks…
The issue is that VAR wouldn’t have fixed this, because if the same clown making the initial decision looks at it again he probably isn’t changing his mind. The amount of people looking at the clip and still concluding that it was a legit red shows you that this wouldn’t change anything. You’d also have matches lasting 3 hours long cause we’d be reviewing every minor infraction.
Ideally the answer is just that the refs stop being inconsistent cunts.
