What rules would those be? Just curious.
It’s more akin to an evil lair than a home tbf.
Also just in case people were for some reason under the impression that only the Dems do fundraising off the back of dodgy opportunities…

Trump was far too relaxed with the raid to have anything incriminating at the house - although I wouldn’t be surprised if something made it’s way their during the raid.
From the outside looking in, this looks certainly politically motivated. Mid terms are coming up and the only way Democrats aren’t eviscerated is to make Trump the face of Republicans
Are you suggesting Joe Biden directed the FBI to get the warrant? Or that Joe Biden told the judge to sign it?
I never mentioned or suggested Joe Biden did anything. Is Joe Biden the only Democrat Politician in the USA with any contacts within the FBI or with Judges?
The Trump Russia Investigation was politically motivated, why can the Trump house raid not also be politically motivated?
They could have easily requested the documents without an FBI raid.
They could have, sure. But if you know you’re dealing with a very litigious person like Trump and you (you being the DOJ in this situation) believe there’s evidence of some wrongdoing (no matter how petty) in the house, why go through the process of asking politely, having Trump refuse…and then what?
At that point you’ve shown your hand in terms of information or items you’re looking for without having a right to seize them, which, if you’re thinking in terms of a criminal investigation isn’t too bright because it gives the person holding that information or items the opportunity to move them to a different location.
It would be unusual imo for a prosecutor to ask politely first in any situation, but that’s just my opinion having done that job in the past.
Don’t you think the optics is far worse than asking for the documents back, which he could easily state he declassified them when he was the sitting president; then the DOJ has no grounds for the raid.
That’s not how you run an investigation. It just isn’t. If you believe Person A engaged in criminal wrongdoing and has evidence of it in their home, the safest way to get that evidence and ensure the seizure holds up in court is to get a warrant. End of. That’s how you do it. That’s how I directed any detective who asked me and the DOJ has people way smarter than I am working there. Whether it’s guns, drugs, stolen property, you get a warrant.
I understand you’re inclined to see Trump in a more favorable light but it would be so odd for a prosecutor to treat him with kid gloves especially knowing his history of fighting subpoenas. Asking him? That would smack of being concerned with optics more so than going through the process of getting a Federal search warrant.
We don’t know for certain what the DOJ and FBI are looking for but we think it’s connected to the boxes of documents we know Trump took to Florida with him.
I don’t know that it matters whether those documents are classified or not if the alleged crime is simply removing the documents. It makes no difference to a prosecutor.
And in any event I’m not sure Trump could turn around and say “Oh all that stuff? I declassified it” and make the whole thing disappear. There’d have to be a paper trail showing that it was declassified when he was President.
Overall he’s being treated like anyone else who has potentially incriminating material in their home. And for all the people saying it’s a stunt by the Democrats, Trump is out soliciting for donations off the back of this.
I understand you may think it’s all some big plot to embarrass Trump but having done that job before I can tell you that the safest way to recover evidence is to get a warrant and that nobody needs to do anything to embarrass Trump. He’ll do it himself.
The current state of US politics remains a shit show. Two tribes that are run by the loudest, most obnoxious factions. I really think the rest of us should start our own political party. Call ourselves the “Shut the fuck up, already!” party.
At the moment it akin to 3rd world countries
You are excusing the obvious they using this to embarrass Trump.
Hopefully next we’ll get an investigation into Nancy Pelosi’s obvious insider trading.
I’m not excusing it, I’m telling you that’s not how you run an investigation. If the DOJ wanted to embarrass him there are other ways to do it. They could have made sure he was home during the raid, they could have held a press conference about it highlighting any alleged wrongdoing.
I’m also not sure how it embarrasses him. Having a warrant executed at your home doesn’t mean you’re being charged and it doesn’t mean you’re guilty. It just means you have something the government wants.
@Jules the fact that individual members of Congress and their immediate families are allowed to own stock and aren’t forced to put it into a trust is absolutely ridiculous.
But how would they get rich?! What are you, a commie? /s
I agree. But the blatant way that she and her husband are gaming the system is ridiculously corrupt.
They don’t even bother trying to hide it.
To think the US political landscape is still “rightly” regarded as one of the best in the world goes to show how f*cked up the entire planet has become. How did our species get to this point ffs
Why try to hide it. Nobody’s gonna do anything about it. The same reason Congress always bats away suggestions of term limits or cooling off periods before they can go into lobbying.
They already asked for the documents back, earlier this year. And clearly Trump didn’t fully comply.
Trump can’t retroactively declassify documents. If a sitting president wants to do that, there is a formal process and there would be records of whether or not that process occurred for a given document. So he certainly can’t say that now.
At the end of the day, when you execute a warrant, you leave a copy of that warrant that spells out what you’re seeking and what was taken. If Trump and his people truly truly feel that the government has done them wrong here, they could easily just make the warrant public. But they’re not doing that, are they?
True, but you would think the media would be calling it out for what it is.
