Well in your hypothetical example you may well have been handed a 50mill reward from the police because if this guy also had arrest warrants in place from both trump and biden administrations.
Like how Obama got congress approval for assassinations of bin laden or Gaddaffi? Or how Biden got approval for strikes on Libya or Syria etc? Or how trump got approval for cartel boat strikes? The presidency has powers to act which dont require congress votes.
You’re using previous illegal invasions to justify a current illegal invasion. Even if the U.S. congress approves assassinations and foreign coups, they’re still neither legal nor ethical. That’s not how international law works.
Exhibit A of the disingenuousness of defending a completely indefensible attack and breaking of national sovereignty:
All of the justifications cited by you are the same ones the regime are trotting out and they’re paper thin at best. Not sure if it was you or @Cristo but someone listed Russia and China potentially invading Latin America OK take that argument to anyone with even the most basic understanding of the ramifications of China or Russia—who can’t even invade Ukraine!—doing any sort of military activity in Latin America and Caribbean.
It’s telling whenever defenders of this sort of invasion can’t just say it with their chest instead of hiding behind all kinds of flimsy justifications like bringing “freedom” to the people.
Trump said it with his chest, it’s about the oil. Say it with your chest and stop hiding behind fascist talking points.
I’ve already acknowledged it was about oil after posting a video of a Venezuelan guy recognise it’s about oil.
This is a gigantic geopolitical win for Trump. Everything a government does is for geopolitical reasons. It’s why I took exception to SCRJJ raising moral reasons.
I said it was a good thing for many levels because
it secures a huge oil reserve for global markets instead of finding its way back door into China or Russia.
it limits any form of footprint of Russia/China in South America for regional destabilisation.
Maduro was holding relationships with Hezballah and Iran. Was backed militarily by Russia receiving 6bn in equipment.
was running a drug cartel supplying US with billions of Cocaine.
And yes this happening is a huge cause of celebration for Venezuelans. Is it the sole reason trump did it? No? But regardless it is still very popular with the local people.
The only thing I would disagree with there is U.S. national interest is not even a consideration here. This about Trump’s personal interest and the old boy neo-conservatives leftover from the Bush era.
Marco Rubio, the Cuban American and Venezuelan American communities in Florida. Their ideological opposition to any socialist government in Latin America.
In the mid and long term this is bad for U.S. relationships with other nations.
So you accept the U.S. as world police and would support your own government being “extracted” in the middle of the night. I think we need to bring freedom to the people of India. I think there maybe narco terrorists and hezbollah somewhere over there. Trust me bro.
That remains the lesser of two evils for Venezuelans.
Either all of us come together and form a better UN which can safeguard human rights or we all just accept the status quo.
How long we as a society gonna sit idle watching a whole population of North Korea being isolated from the world and being subjected to famine by Korean dictatorial regime?
If sitting idle is what we gonna do and the best alternative is to have US act as a world police who liberates North Koreans, then fuck it.
If in return for better life for Venezuelans, the world has to lose oil reserves to USA, take it.
It’s an objective fact the standard of living in Venezuela was dire. They were even fleeing to countries like Trinidad & Tobago. As mentioned before they were a shite neighbour (Guyana).
However:
Life lesson, if you think it can’t get worse. It most definitely can.
Improving the standard of living requires a leadership that has an active interest in it, it’s questionable how much they care about it in their own country never mind someone elses.
While I personally think life will ‘improve’ (relatively speaking) will it improve enough to prevent dissatisfaction? I don’t think so. U.S ‘record’ at this is terrible.
On that note it’ll be interesting to see if the energy for ‘look at them celebrating’ (Which to be fair it is worthy reason to celebrate) crowd will be there when they start protesting in the future when pro-western government isn’t predictably doing it’s job. I expect they’ll be called ‘ungrateful’ and ‘dumb people who turned their country into a shithole’ or something like that.
When does this ever actually happen though lol? Latin America is still marred with high levels of violent crime. Cartels still have their hand in all the pockets they need.
And look at Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan… what peaceful life do they live now after years of exploitative western rule?
Just sounds silly to me that people think American exploitation of Venezuela will somehow lead to better outcomes for the general population when we don’t really have much history to prove that.
Happy to accept it as fact but I believe the term scraping the barrel applies here. If that government was so great it wouldn’t of collapsed. (My very shallow understanding is the US backed government was incredibly corrupt).
Cuba in the U.S own backyard is a fine example of the consequences of ‘exploitative rule’.
It is upto Venezuelans to ensure they don’t fuck up like the likes of Libya. There is only so much damage US can do without the help of bereaucratic support of Venezuelans
The reality show regime is memeing the ever living piss out of this and it’s hilarious, just not in the way they intend.
That perp walk video trying to shame Maduro and he just ended up looking alpha as fuck by walking in cuffed while being manhandled by 2 agents noticeably shorter than him, all nonchalant and wishing people a Happy New Year.
Compare that to Bubba’s little friend when he had a perp walk and had to walk and pull a face to act tough for the cameras.
