Not a great look, Sol. Not the least surprised that he cares about this stuff though.
Quick google search of some of male footballers that have received such honours, they tend to get it for more than just sporting achievement.
David James, Rio Ferdinand, Marcus Rashford, and Tony Adams for example have all picked up honours for their charitable work.
Sol has always seemed resentful. Maybe for good reason but this is a weird way of expressing it.
Honestly when I read these tweets my first thought was “Kanye”.
It’s like it’s more about his ego than any larger grievance about racism. It’s just a way of excusing these weird outbursts.
Damn, used to idolise him as a kid, who would say he’s such a muppet outside of the pitch (mostly after the retirement though)
Imagine how some of the ladies feel? They won a World Cup and only four of them got awarded for it
Such a twat. Big chip on his shoulder. Well done for the invincible season though.
Loved O’Leary. Loved Keown. Never loved Sol the man, but as a player if I was picking someone to partner Tony Adams in my dream team he is my choice.
I do think Sol doesn’t get a lot of recognition for how great he was at his best.
Think people often underestimate how good he actually was at his best and was comfortably among Europe top CBs.
I never liked the person he is though. And his post football career had definitely reinforced my opinion of him. Never been someone that I really took to.
Brilliant defender. Genuinely world class for a long period of time.
Absolute bellend of a man though.
I must have been asleep at the time because I don’t remember Campbell scoring in the world cup final for England
Typo. He means finals, as opposed to the actual final.
We all know you were a great defender, Sol. Doesn’t look good to come out beating your own drums and begging for MBE OBE.
I wish more people, when offered these things, told them to piss off.
Richie McCaw turned down a knighthood here in NZ.
Yep. You could take it with a pinch of salt, and I was quite young at that time, but definitely considered him a top 3 defender in the world during his prime. Was an absolute rock, had basically the same influence on our back line as Van Dijk on Liverpool’s during his prime.
For me he was on similar level with Vidic (in his prime), a similar kind of presence, who many consider the best CB in the PL so far, but Campbell somehow gets overlooked there.
A physical monster, but was also very intelligent positionally, could read the game well… Besides being an absolute rock in the air and usually eating people in any kind of one on one duels, he’d get quite a nuber of easy interceptions with his good positioning and anticipation.
As he mentined briefly and modestly… He was absolutely brilliant on international level too, in big cups, by far the best defender in the England shirt from what I saw.
