Premier League star arrested on suspicion of rape

Consensual sex with a 17 year old is not nearly as bad as raping two women, if the stories are to be believed

IIRC correctly his wife dumped him as well which made it look worse.

A sex offender is a sex offender. No club wants even the suggestion of that anywhere near them

See, that’s why I say optics. Majority of people just go off of headlines. When people see the world ā€œchildā€ they don’t immediately think 17 year olds.

Some of them will think of 8-10 year olds which makes it even more vile.

Yeah it sounds like Partey is basically fucked. Even if he didn’t do anything his name and reputation will be tarred with the allegation.

Yup the man’s done and he hasn’t even been directly named as the person arrested and questioned yet

Thought this was interesting and answers some questions I’ve seen in this thread.

I get that they cant name the suspect for legal reasons. But they can say he is 29 years old, lives in Barnet, plays in the prem, is one of the best players of the team, is going to the WC with his nation, should have been on a pre-season tour, incident happend in Marbella Spain in June. Thats basically the same as saying the name.

Maybe some outlets would report stuff like that but others may be more circumspect.

There are undoubtedly people like me in those offices who get to read copy before it goes to print to ensure that the outlet as a whole is protected. It’s the same in my day job whenever one of my clients wants to publish something, even if it’s a letter to a private citizen (because they’re a government entity), I have to review it for legal form and sufficiency.

Can someone please update the thread title if something conclusive comes up?

I don’t want this news to further spoil my preseason excitement.

I’m pretty close to just unleashing the mighty power of the mute button myself. Once we find out more I probably will. The speculation in cases like this is never healthy.

Still would have no question about playing him if there are no charges.

Presume there has been as you don’t usually get bailed without but I think they do have the option to bail for a month and investigate further.

If he’s charged, suspend without pay until there’s a conclusion. Wouldn’t even consider releasing him til he’s proven guilty, it would be unjust to do so, even for a millionaire footballer.

If he weren’t to be charged, I reckon his head would be all over the place. He couldn’t be on the pitch whether guilty or not.

If he is charged, then there’s no way he can play and nor should he.

This is horrible. Just hope justice is served and the victim able to recover and heal.

Not a good idea. TH has outlined why it’s not a good idea from a players side. It would be bad for a clubs reputation as they probably have a more detailed view of the situation.

Didn’t know about the 3 months bit, that makes it a bit more difficult as I thought they basically had a month to charge him based on the current arrest.

But I’m still not sure about the other bit, I think the club wouldn’t be willing because we’ve always been an ā€˜optics first’ club but I don’t see why we shouldn’t until the point the police have enough evidence to make a charge. For me that’s the tipping point where it becomes a case to answer, right now it’s simply an allegation.

Inb4 someone thinks I’m being dismissive of the issue, I’m certainly not aiming to be but I do believe in the innocent until proven concept.

You also have to take into consideration that some of our sponsors will be watching very closely. They wont want to have any association with someone who is accused of rape.

That’s what Sunderland and Man City did and they came under scrutiny when their player was eventually charged. Both players remained anonymous however before they were charged (correct me if I’m wrong).

The fact that people have widely shared the players name makes it much more difficult to play him. They’d be soooo many issues. Given the severity of the crime, there’s no chance you can play the player in good conscience.

If we came under scrutiny for trying to be fair to a potentially innocent man I’d be fine with that.

I get there’s the chance we essentially play a rapist which sounds completely ludicrous and abhorrent but if the reverse is true (I.e he was innocent) I don’t think it’s fair to banish them.

I’m not 100% convinced what the right thing would be tbh, the safer thing would be to suspend him until he’s cleared/locked up but it doesn’t feel right to me as that immediately assumes guilt without fact.

Gotta put my lawyer hat on for a second. There is absolutely zero chance I would advise my client to let any player who was arrested for rape continue to play matches.

If they have good attorneys at the club they’ll be well versed in UK employment law and what actions the employer can and can’t take against an employee. There may also be protections or protocols built into a player’s contract which dictate when, where and how the club can take action against them.

In the NFL, for example, players could be put on a special kind of inactive list.

I’m not aware of any collective bargaining rights or agreements that the PL players have. I’m actually not sure if they have a union period.

I don’t think there would be any legal ramifications for the club if they did, but it would still be a terrible move.
