Pre-2000s Football

Rather stay in Boro. You’re never too far from the smell of shit in Madrid.

The three major striker signings that summer were Ronaldo, Vieri and Inzaghi.

Between them they managed 103 goals in 127 games for Barcelona, Atletico and Juventus.

Resounding successes. Ronaldo and Vieri both left Spain after one season where they combined to score 76 goals in 81 games lol.

Oh what could have been if we ever actually got to see them together properly at Inter.

Banged them in for fun at Newcastle. Was surprised they let him go but suppose there was only one winner in that department after they signed wor Alan.

Yeah he was great for Newcastle but flopped at Spurs, at least as a goal scorer.

Some notable absentees due to injuries and some on the bench.

Don’t beat around the bush @SRCJJ you saw a lineup with all your favourite Italian defenders and wanted to post it

And there are still retards who say Beckham couldn’t dribble, he was average and overrated. His passing and crossing ability was out of this world.

He was a bigger player for United at the time than Scholes and Giggs.

Btw in my eyes Scholes is absolutely the most revisionised and overhyped player by the never generation who haven’t watched him (maybe saw him a bit at the end).
An absolute cunt on the pitch too.

Beckham was a magnificent player and anybody who thinks otherwise never saw him play

I saw him play in the flesh loads of times, all for Man Utd. Mostly, but not exclusively, against Arsenal and my impression was that he could be magnificent in some games, peripheral in others. Show him on his left foot and he wasn’t so golden on the ball.

Back to that photo. Glenn Hoddle was before my time. Did he get stick for playing 352? Should he of gotten more time?

When he was on the same team with Zidane and Roberto Carlos, able to start with them, play with them, and take a lot of free kicks among them.
Becks proved it already.

Interested to see which decade in football people prefer out of the last 4(I presume nobody in here is old enough to have seen football in the 70s ).

  • 1980s
  • 1990s
  • 2000s
  • 2010s

2000s because that’s when I actually watched lol.

It depends if you prefer Baggio, Romario, that Bulgarian striker for Barcelona who’s name I can’t remember now, Gazza, Laudrup brothers…

To Messi, CR7, Kaka, Henry Rooney etc.

Because many players were great in both decades

Good thing about the 2000s is that we had plenty of stars from 1990s produce at a high level still in the 2000s.
In general though, football was just so cool at the time. It had everything.
You had 5-6 leagues competing at a very high level, you had great international competitions, there multiple sides from that period that have a case of being the best ever, some of them achieving feats that have yet to be replicated, you’ve had of underdog stories as well.
Iconic teams, iconic seasons, iconic players, ironic managers, iconic moments.

The 90’s are my early memories of football but the 2000’s are where I began fanatically obsessing over the sports.

Aside from my club heroes like Thierry Henry my first memories always revolve around Nedved, Edgar Davids, Del Piero, Shevchenko, Ronaldinho etc.

Check the 80’s.
I think all the powerhouses got at least one good team in big tournaments.
WC 82 - Italy
Euro 84- France
WC 86 - Argentina
Euro 88 - Netherlands
WC 90 - West Germany

England had an underrated squad getting into WC semi in 90
Netherlands won the Euro with their great AC trio in Van Basten, Gullit and Rijkaard
Then you have Brazil, the classic team with Zico, Socrates (and a few) in WC 82 and 86
France getting into two WC semi with Platini and their great midfield
Argentina getting into another WC final in 90
West Germany in three consecutive WC finals

The 80’s was just as strong as any generation.

One of THE CLASSIC games.
That Brazil team was also favorite to win the two WC, just a bit unlucky.
