a bunch of contracted footballers are capable of playing shit football
One day I really want the farmers (I mean real farmers, people who who have cows, sheep and stuff) to form a farmers football league.
Played by farmers, owned by farmers, officiated by farmers. Gonna be the best league of all times.
I mean none of these are actual farmers
But goddamn the bottom ones especially definitely bringing the standard down
-57 GD
And isnât that for most leagues true? A few good clubs in the first 5/6
The rest is garbage
So this idea that other leagues than premier league are farmers leagues goes out of the window and I illustrated it with the city dominance example compared to dominance of Bayern in Bundesliga and PSG in Ligue 1
You can be offended by my take of pegging the premier league down to these levels
But it doesnât make it less true
The definition you used goes out of the window entirely by the way no matter which way we define it.
City turned this league into a one horse league like the ones others like to call farmers leagues.
The debate is nonsense, as is the farmer league narrative. The PL really isnât imperious as a competitive entity when it goes H2H with other European clubs at CL, EL or ECL level.
The âcompetitivenessâ of the PL is a optical illusion too
Clearly someone doesnât get the joke. Obviously they are professional leagues.
The point of the joke is to say that the majority of the players playing in those leagues have day jobs as farmers.
Even though it is obviously factually inaccurate, it implies poor quality.
A farmers league is a league where the overall quality of the league is amateurish in comparison to the Premier League and winning it is not impressive.
But they never go H2H in a full league season. Cup football is completely different.
The dross of a Bundesliga or Ligue 1 can easily compete with the dross of the premier league
It could easily be that Sheffield and the likes get trounced by Bundesliga bottom dwellers
So it doesnât really make sense at all
Since Cityâs dominance the premier league isnât more competitive than other leagues and in Europe they are in equal footing with European top clubs. Sometimes we have English teams go far sometimes we have no English teams at all going far.
What is the objective of this debate?
That PL football is of a low standard.
I have to disagree. I canât bear to watch matches from any other league regularly. You have to be a tactical nerd to enjoy them.
That PL is not competitive.
I agree; the corrupt nature in which Chelsea & then City have taken over PL has made it an inorganically one-sided affair with an occasional surge of quality coming from one of the regular clubs.
Since Chelsea won their first PL title, Only 3 regular clubs(United, Leicester, Liverpool) have won titles during that time.
Although the second placed clubs do tend to make the title race interesting, there always seems to be a foregone conclusion.
I would still prefer PL over any other league.
La Liga would be my next best choice.
Also the perceived angle of premier league being the best in the world is according to who?
English? And the Anglophile world? Perhaps there are many Australian, American and South African fans of the premier league because they speak the same language and share some levels of same culture?
What would the answer be if we asked a Spanish fan what the best league in the world is? Or a Latin American one?
Do you think these people care about the premier league? Beyond the known juggernauts of Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool?
When I look at that GD of the bottom half of the premier league and read that h2h this league is so tough / more tough than other leagues I can only laugh out loud.
Sure, cup football is different but there isnât anything else to measure. Point is if the PL had a disproportionate standard of quality compared to other leagues theyâd dominate the euro competitions constantly.
The league phase revised CL format next season will be interesting.
Sky sports. Why donât you go spam their twitter feed instead of OA
I donât use twitter
And I donât watch sky sports
According to us
Exactly
Also excellent PR campaign from the PL to brand itself as the best league in the world
Deep down I think most of you know there is a sliver of truth to everything just said against this assessment of the best league in the world.
You could certainly make the argument that the PL is the most equitable in terms of finances, and also that we are the most competitive (At least until City became what they are).
Best is subjective, and just PR.
I agree for the most part, I guess Iâm using âfarmerâs leagueâ interchangably/not in a literal sense but more so that 1 team keeps winning every year.
EPL is by far still the most competitive though, I donât remember the last time the league was wrapped up by February/March. Maybe Liverpoolâs pandemic season was the last time
We used to be.
Equitable sure I can agree with that.
Competitive not since the City dominance sorry. Not more competitive than Bundesliga and Ligue 1 who both have seen their equivalent of Liverpool win the league once in a series of one horse wins.
I am curious to see with factual data which leagues were wrapped up by February or March
