Monreal has been a very good servant, however, he’s been long in the tooth for a while now but has papared over the cracks by scoring some goals here and there.
Needs to be be moved on or relegated to something like 4th choice CB in a three for the remainder of his contract, he’s done.
Our back line needs so much investment it’s ridiculous.

Kos is one injury away from being retired (he will retire in a year or two anyway).
Sokratis is not young anymore.
When will Holding come back, and will he get back on tract after the serious injury?

Bellerin is injury prone and don’t know how much he can contribute without speed (and defensive positioning)

Alaba certainly can boost up the defensive line, but him alone can’t help much, and he is expensive!!!
I think Emery might have to use Monreal next season as back up, for the reasons you said, unless he is going to buy more than just a CB in the transfer window.
Our options are poor in defence and the only good defensive players we have are often injured, or too old, or both.
Monreal is a well experienced defender, and is versatile, so despite him not being as good as he was, he still decent as back up to who ever we buy.
This is also the reason I don’t think he will sell Mustafi, unless another club offers us 20m or more for him, because we are often down to the bare minimum because of injuries.
Umtiti and Alaba would be the ideal transfer solution but, realistically, we are never going to splash that amount of cash in the same window on two defenders, when other positions also need replacing.
Agree with everything you’ve said for the most part, is Bellerin that injury prone though ? Or is it more or less than one long term ACL injury ?

Really weak link in the side now. Trying really hard but times caught up with him and he is getting found wanting every game now.
He could still cost us big in the next few weeks.
He and AMN covered over some other mistakes today though… he definitely shouldn’t be starting, but is an ok depth option for right now as we upgrade starters… much work to do on upgrading defenders, including the aging ones.
