The hypotheticals are based on the fact we are clearly trying to sign a new goalkeeper and that we’ve been actively floating our first choice RB of the last half decade on the market.
They may not come off but it’s highly unlikely we end this window without more signings and that’s quite a heavy investment from the board at a time when our revenues are declining and we’ve taken on more debt. There’s also the absence of European competition this year too.
I have to look at his decision to keep Xhaka and also the fact Xhaka is being given a new deal with improved terms despite being willing to take a pay cut to leave the club. Maybe that doesn’t fall on Arteta but the desire to keep him does.
I don’t have an agenda against Arteta. I’ve long been optimistic about this season and thought we’d see some improvements but pre season and the opening game taught me absolutely nothing is going to change. If you put Arteta in charge of the City mega squad maybe his ideas work but this current squad and Arteta are not a compatible match.
Isn’t Gabriel an Arteta signing? That’s 30m. Ben White is 58m. Are you saying Arteta doesn’t rate Tierney? He’s probably one of our best players that Arteta utilizes quite often. That’s 120m on almost a completely new back line. I don’t understand the thought process of defending Arteta even tho he’s been given a ton of tools to work with…
Tierney was signed during Emery’s reign, like half the players people are attributing to Arteta’s mega investment, they came in under a different hierarchy lol.
@SRCJJ I know you were supportive of Arteta for a bit honestly your stance on this is one of the most agenda based comments I’ve heard in regard to Arteta’s reign. Poke holes in the tactics, man management, faith in certain players and their correct positions, but honestly man. Look at the lineup from the final game of last season, then go look at the lineup against Brentford and tell me honestly that you feel that’s a squad that our most backed manager in the history of the club is working with. Crazy, really crazy.
It doesn’t matter it’s a quality player. You’d rather have guys like Cedric, Willian, and Mari who are all guys Arteta signed?? Lmaooo bruh u really are smoked out af on this one
Look at the upheaval, incomings and outgoings, new contracts and stuff in a really short space of time and tell me this guy hasn’t been given the keys to the kingdom.
From the dismissal of Ozil from the team when it was clear as day we needed a creative playmaker. Banishing Guendouzi for attitude issues and bombing his value. Sending Saliba on loan twice. Getting the left footed CB he wanted and then getting another one because it’s an important part of his ideas. Getting Ben White for £50m+ because of his ball playing qualities. Keeping Xhaka in the face of his desire to leave. Getting to keep Luiz and also getting to bin Luiz. Getting Willian whom he actively wanted.
In 18 months this guy had effectively reshaped the team. With Leno likely out on his door, we are looking at potentially having 4 of the 5 defender / goalkeepers being completely different to when he came in. A midfield of Partey - Lokonga - Xhaka is drastically different from when he arrived. The front line will have Odegaard in it show as Arteta main man by all reports. You just can’t say he hasn’t been backed more than anyone when we could hypothetically line up when at full strength with a team that’s like 7-8 new players to when he arrived
He has been backed in every way you’d want a manager to been backed. It’s not just about money going in. His decisions are clear and the club support them and support him. That’s why he managed two 8th place finishes and his job isn’t in jeopardy.
Of course it fucking matters man, if you’re considering Arteta the most backed manager in the history of Arsenal you can’t simply include players that have been signed before him or haven’t even been signed yet. That turns a legitimate stance into an agenda riddled with bias and dislike for the manager.
If we add Odegaard signing for this year and give Arteta benefit of the doubt that this is his only transfer window to do his own business, we have a net spend of 83 million pounds.
For reference, the average of the 7 years ending 2019 we had net spend of 45 million.
That is nearly a 100% increase in net spend this one window over that average (and for the “years” analysis, it includes ALL transfers including winter)… it also doesn’t include Ramsdale.
Also, fwiw, the year before (20/21), we had net spend just around 60 million, also well above the 45 average.
Tuchel came in to Chelsea with Frank Lampards team and had them playing infinitely better. He didn’t need a bunch of signings. Chelsea are only going to be getting a few first team players this summer to supplement the already expensive squad Tuchel has at his disposal. This is how it works, dunno what kind of crazy fantasy you’ve built in your head tbh
The problem is we are desperate in multiple positions and afwul at selling players, when you add up those factors you get our current transfer dealings
Done some quick napkin maths based on numbers that looked reasonably reliable but there’s obviously discrepancies that need to be accounted for.
Emery during his reign had transfer activity of about 206m, while Arteta so far up to Odegaard today is at 162.5m.
So not only is he not the most backed manager of Arsenal history, he isn’t even the most backed out of the last two yet. That may change before this window is out but even so the two sets of figures are comparable for the time frame.
Like I say I get not liking him for the job but we don’t have to make up narratives to put him down.
No point in trying to bring facts to an argument where people are unwilling to see past their own agenda so I think I’ll drop this now, not talking about you here SCRJJ, more the opposite of whatever Artetasexuals are.
That still equates to being backed in my mind, Emery should just have been stronger in his conviction in regard to who he wanted but don’t tell me for second that 72 million on one of Europes most talented players isn’t a backing.
Like I say I’m done with this now because it’s not about facts but rather hearsay and interpretation . I’m talking about money and strictly players in and out, all the other stuff is impossible for us to know, we can only assume and it’s pointless.
Rocky I’m not said Arteta isn’t backed I’m just saying I don’t think he’s been backed to the point we can consider him the most backed Arsenal manager ever.
It’s not just about figures it’s about decision making. There isn’t anything being made up here. The entire squad is being reshaped under Arteta and he’s getting to sign players that he actually wants to sign and not players that are being put on him.
Emery did not want Torreira or Pepe. He wanted to sign Nzonzi and Zaha. He also wanted Banega to replace Ozil.
The entire list has been draw up of the major incomings, decisions and outgoings during the 18 months of Arteta and these incomings have been made inspire of two 8th place finishes. The club seem to have unrivalled faith in him despite the results and the quality of football on the pitch.
Emery was the head coach, Arteta is the manager and that’s an important distinction. Emery was never given any real autonomy in the transfer market he worked at the mercy of Sven and Sanllehi. Arteta is clearly getting players that he wants.
Lokonga is an Arteta man. Arteta spoke of how he spoke at length to Kompany about him.
Mari was an Arteta man given his former role at City. Gabriel was the signing Arteta wanted at LCB. White is the RCB he wanted.
He didn’t want Ozil, Torreira, Guendouzi, Saliba, Kolasinac and subsequently they’re all gone / loaned out / being shopped around.
Arteta has been in total control of the direction of this squad working closely with Edu. Emery may have had numbers that appear impressive on paper (although largely skewed by the £72m spent on Pepe and the £30m spent on an 18 year old CB who never played). But Arteta has had financial backing and backing with his decision making
I think it is fair to say Emery was the only manager backed like Arteta - he also kept his job for just over a year, so most of his second transfer window really didn’t count for him.
Discounting the previous manager’s spend as “not Arteta’s so it doesn’t count against him” is kind of BS though. It includes players like Tierney, Martinelli, Pepe (for whatever you think about him), plus assets to sell like Guendo and Saliba.
So the only other manager backed like Arteta was sacked for equal or better performance faster than Arteta… if I’m not mistaken Emery had 2 points/match average, Arteta 1.8.
