Maguire is a top defender, the hate is being way overblown.
Mate do you always have to go for it being on English nationality.
You do this on loads of players, refs,managers.
I look at a lot of these so called modern defenders and their strengths lie in basically defending from the half way line because they have the recovery pace to push high up and the comfort on the ball to contribute massively to possession.
But they’re exposed in defensive scenarios because of their lack of defensive nous. I think De Ligt had a lot of the same issues when he joined Juve - he was good at everything but his defensive abilities were a little on the raw side but fast forward a couple seasons later and he is basically a complete defender who maybe just misses the experience that older defenders have.
He’s never been a top defender. He’s so poor in one on ones, his reading of the game is not good enough and his athleticism leaves him brutally exposed.
Maguire is mid table fodder and always has been
I mean, why else was Maguire 50m? His nationality was a factor in the price. Everyone knows there’s a premium on young English players. It’s how we were able to sell Iwobi to Everton for a ton of money.

The sight of Ferguson looking at the sad state of Man Utd is certainly very enjoyable.
My god. It’s even worse than I remembered.
He was one of the best pure defenders in the League in 20/21 when United actually had some stability and tactical consistency. His sample that year was over 3000 mins and he was a top 10 CB
But with his charm, intelligence and boyband good looks, he could have a career as a film actor, if he decides to leave football.
IDK. With that slightly vacant look behind his eyes I see him more as a shithead enforcer for the mob in a Netflix series.

He ain’t no top defender lol
He can be solid in a system that doesn’t push up and is very compact, thing is plenty of progressive coaches don’t play that way and so he can be exposed.
His peak for a supposed top defender is nothing to write home about, the amount of times he has got away with murder is ridiculous. Protected by the refs ever since he signed on the dotted line for United
If Maguire is supposed to be the leader of your defence then you’re in trouble.

Maguire is basically living off one good season at United where coincidentally they played a counter attacking system.
A top defender is capable of playing higher up the pitch without being brutally exposed. I’m not even VVD’s biggest fan but a defender like him who can basically transmit his quality in multiple different approaches is to me the epitome of a top defender.
Even looking at Chiellini at 37 he’s equally adept at playing in a back 3, back 4, pressing higher, sitting deep. That’s a top defender.
I actually thought Maguire was a pretty talented lad when he played for the Foxes, I’ve came to realize it was just Evans’ calming and professional attitude that made him look that way. Subconsciously I should have known this at the time but I did think there was something about him.
I don’t think he’s as bad as he looks at United though, the Theatre of Dreams is literally where you go to watch your career die, it’s the same way I still rate Conte even though he’s all over the place at Spurs. Truth be told a lot of the shit Maguire does wrong looks confidence based, he probably hates his fucking life there. There is a lot of simple shit he gets wrong too though that can’t really be defended.

He was a good/decent buy at the price Leicester bought him for but United are mugs because they could have got him when he looked good for Hull but nah they had to go and see him play well for Leicester and then thought hey let’s spaff £80mil
I thought he looked quite decent at Hull and that bigger clubs should be in for him but when you’re taking the kind of sums he eventually went for it’s just comedy
Dude made that Leicester defence what it was for like 3 or so seasons. He’s done now at his age but he was a fantastic signing for them. You can tell how good a player is by his absence, like how we barely looked a team in January without Partey. Yet people were going on about how shit he was too.
If these players were shit a team wouldn’t be insanely reliant on them.
