White and Martinez as a CB pairing would be a disaster. At least one of Gabby or Saliba need to be in the starting line up or we will be extremely vulnerable aerially and physically.
I would think it is more likely that Martinez comes is as a midfielder who can drop back.
Short stature doesnt mean a CB is poor in the air.
Gabriel himself only posted slightly better aerial stats compared to White too
An immediate concern, though, is Martinezās height. Standing at just a shade under 5ā10", potential suitors may be worried that the Argentine would be bullied in the Premier League, yet the centre-back won a respectable 3.7 aerial duels per 90. Crucially is that he returned an aerial success rate of 70.5%, that the fifth best of the 153 players to contest 50 or more aerial duels in the Eredivisie, and impressively third of all centre-backs.
Just as Fabio Cannavaro wasnāt the most imposing centre-back, the Italian instead relied on the timing of his leap to get the better of forwards. Martinez is similar in that regard, so any issues surrounding his height can be put to rest.
I believe someone posted some stats out and Lisandroās aerial numbers were top notch, and he managed to deal with many big strikers in the CL, Haalans and Nunez to name a few.
There is a reason why none of the top teams in Europe play with two centre backs who arenāt very physical or quick. Furthermore, Gabriel has been our best centre back for two seasons in a row. Dropping him would be ludicrous.
There are some rumblings that De Ligt at Juventus has never been the best combination. Plus who knows whatās going on behind that scenes now that Raiola has past away. I always thought he was the reason De Ligt ended up there.
Well, you think that as a fan. For all we know Arteta thought White had a better season, and judging how White started every league or cup match he was fit then that certainly shows how important he is for Arteta.
Imo if we plan to invest big in a player like Martinez, he surely comes to play as a starter.
Where? I donāt see him as a LB. Even at Ajax he didnāt play there much. At the start he played as a DM, as far as I know, to be pushed to the CB position which is his primary position nowadays.
And thereās where he should be playing here. As a LB, again, with Tomiyasu on the other side, that would be just too conservative imoā¦
I guess he would be the first alternative for Tierney though, and considering how injury prone Tierney is, surely heāll get a considerable number of games there.
But still, with everybody fit, he isnāt on the bench, and Iād be surpised to see him starting somehere else other than as a CB.
He may be short for a CB, but seems pretty tenacious and doesnāt seem like a guy who falls short on the physical side of the game, on the contrary tbh.
