Well of course he would, but he doesn’t and that player isn’t available on the market. It’s easy to say “If he had Haaland” but he doesn’t and isn’t going to ever have Haaland, and unless there’s an obvious elite #9 out there that we can get I think we’re going to have to settle for the false 9 type players in that position.
I agree that there are other strikers who would’ve been better but not a single person was mentioning Wolfemade or Ekitike as Arsenal signings back in the summer.
He actually indirectly addressed that in the press conference after Brentford.
He said he had nightmares this summer about signing another #9 because he liked Havertz and Jesus so much but he had to deal with the present(Jesus was out with a big injury, Havertz was coming back from a big injury).
Painful to bring out the receipts from Jan, but here we go. Understandably, Arsenal couldn’t justify the fee for such a raw high ceiling player, it is what it is.
No trees are being pulled up. We’re talking about players with 6,7 and 8 goals and less than half a season of evidence so far.
Ultimately I don’t care who turns out the better signing as long as the guy we got helps us towards what we’re looking to achieve this season and beyond.
Right so Isak (mr 2 goals in 13 and 1 was a huge gift) gets the unfit and injury excuses but Gyokeres doesn’t despite very similar scenarios.
Meanwhile Ekitike has bagged 7 in 20 (8 in 21 if you include comm shield). Very convenient to make this point after he just bagged 2 goals to move ahead of Gyokeres total btw.
Woltemade has bagged 7 in 19 (6 npg since you seem to not count goals from the spot).
Gyokeres has bagged 6 in 17 (5 npg!!!) and he’s just back from injury.
Now if we look at (widely reported) transfer fees paid for each player we will get the following:
Isak (£130m) - £65m per goal
Ekitike (£79m) - £9.9m per goal
Woltemade (£69m) - £9.9m per goal
Gyokeres (£63.5m) - £10.5m per goal
Our boy really trailing well behind the others isn’t he? Basically you wanted van persie or Haaland when neither existed in the market and you would no doubt be slagging Ekitike or woltemade if they’d come here and hit the same numbers.
So honestly just shut the fuck up and pick a different topic already.
Isak doesn’t have a proven track record of being a 125m Forward. It’s crazy not to think there wasn’t a expectation for him to hit the ground running. Infact people’s masturbation over Liverpool winning the window was based on those assumptions.
I reckon he would do a hell of a lot better if he was playing for a bottom half PL team, that doesn’t face a low block in 90% of games, and were there will be spaces in behind.
Whilst he has not been great, he has not been abysmal - I don’t think being an out and out striker is an easy position to fill in our squad. Havertz is a much more technical player and it took the team a long time to start finding his runs and build chemistry. Even harder for Gyokeres who is a finisher but not really a player involved in the build up.
Would I prefer a different striker, sure, but I don’t know if there were much better alternatives to Gyokeres in this window that would have been game changing signings. Gyokeres needs a bit of time to settle into this squad and the PL - even players like Rice have come out to say how difficult it is to adapt to Arteta’s demands and understanding of the game, a less technical player like Gyokeres will struggle even more to settle.
This is just a fact. We signed him and regardless of what ever people (including myself) thought - we needed something different and to take a punt. The striker market is as weak as I can ever remember it and that’s just how it is atm and we needed to take a punt.
I don’t think any of the major strikers who moved this summer have done a particularly impressive job so it’s not even just our man.
