Emiliano Buendia

Right
any other Emis out there we could look to snap up before Villa?

You have to set your valuation of players and be willing to walk away when the price rises well above that. That’s fundamental to any economic strategy, whether you’re buying a player, a house, or a stock. Whether Arsenal’s valuation of Buendia was correct is another matter.

I remember last January people talking about £50 million for Buendia on Sky, absolute horse shit lol. People really underestimate what £30 odd million means to some clubs in today’s economy.

Exactly, and we then buy a succession of mediocre players for the same position that ended up coasting way more than if we had spent just a few million more on Alonso.

Haggling over a player you’re desperate for to save a small amount is a false economy.

I remember when Newcastle, when Bobby Robson was manager, apparently signed the wrong player! Maybe there are two Buendia’s at Norwich! In which case there is still hope!

Still gutted about this. At least there could be the option to buy him when he is world class after a few seasons at Villa

You have to haggle and be willing to walk away. That is like Dealmaking 101.

The reality is that you very very very rarely truly face a situation in which it is accurate to say “THIS is the player we absolutely need and there is no other option.” There is almost always another option so you need to think about value unless you’re a club with near infinite resources. When you stop thinking about value and alternative options and decide that you have no other choice but to pay whatever is necessary to land the player, that’s how you end up paying 72m for Pepe or 35m for Mustafi or 80m for Harry Maguire.

Its trivial to say in hindsight that we should have paid more to buy Xabi Alonso, because we know how the player’s career turned out from that point onward. The question is how you make decisions when you don’t know how the careers of any of the players in question will go.

Fuck this guy. He managed one measly goal the last time he played in the Premier League. Clearly not cut out to do it at the top level.

Fraud.

On the basis of this post, he’s obviously ripping it up next season

If this is a dig at me, never said he was a fraud, or clearly not cut out. Just I don’t want to take the risk of our forward signing being a winger who only scored 1 goal when we are in danger of cementing ourselves as shitters. I feel that’s a valid concern. Villa are cemented shitters, forever shitting around mid table. I highly doubt he would take us up levels.

Championship players of the season winners often do not match up in the Prem.

For example: Andre Grey, Anthony Knockaert, Matej Vydra, Adel Taarabt etc. They might get snapped up by bigger clubs but never the biggest clubs (on the odd exception they do, they usually flop) My personal favourite is still Ryan Sessegnon winning it over Neves. At the time I said it was ridiculous. I was proved right. This is why I am hot on Neves. He still remains the best player I have ever seen in the Championship. Better than Buendia, so I’m not concerned about him going to Villa.

Ollie Watkins won the award last season, and although he is fine for Villa, he’s not pulling up trees or anything, the biggest clubs won’t come calling.

I reckon Ivan Toney could be special

Shouldn’t be talking for @Flexo but I doubt he is directing it at anyone. He’s just joking around.
