Coronavirus

I blame the government , I agree with everything you said i hate everything they have done, but when they have given rules or guideline however wrong they are, I have stuck to them because I assume most other people have. You cant say oh the government shouldve done this and that but then when they did something you ignore it.

It’s not that they aren’t doing anything right, it’s that it’s usually months too late, and half arsed.

The thing there isn’t an easy answer to covid. The more you shut down, the more companies and people go bust, the more unemployment and the rise of poverty. The more rules you put in place the greater the public backlash amonst certain people. Plus there’s also the chance that shutting things down makes everyone goto supermarkets at the same time, which in turn spreads the virus

Why are other countries handling this better than we are if it’s an impossible balance to find?

Our government failed mostly to handle expectations. Once eat out to help out and the campaign to save Pret happened the fight was over.

You can’t say something is really serious, do a complete u-turn and actively encourage people to do the opposite of what you said they needed to do to deal with the serious problem, then after that do another complete u-turn and expect people to care and take it seriously like they did the first time.

The countries that are handling it better tend to have more resources. So in Germany they took people into hospital far earlier than we were doing. This meant they had a higher survival rate. However we don’t have the bed spaces and resources to do this. The NHS was and is overrun

Our government strategy is essentially to allow the NHS to cope while not ruining businesses too much. So they carry out lockdowns only when the NHS is at breaking point and then try to open the economy when the NHS numbers are more manageable.

The covid management startegy is the balance between letting the NHS cope and not ruining the economy too much

Where does Vietnam factor into this?

Surely we have better resources than Vietnam.

You’re right and the hypocrisy of some Tories with the way they have, not only made a complete mess of the situation but have also profited from it, is disgusting.

Their indecisiveness and lack of direction has made them a laughing stock and, despite ministers being ridiculed by nearly everyone, including the Tory media, they will still probably win the next election.

The UK nearly up to 68 million tests since the pandemic started, which is one test per person in a sense, obviously though some people would have been tested 30 times and other wouldn’t have been tested at all.

Vietnam closed down their borders. Our economy is partly based on being a global hub, so it’s not as easy to do that

What’s the point so late in the game lol

We’ve had millions of people vaccinated now and no-one is travelling to the uk from other countries anyway.

Should have been done a year ago, too little too late.

Should still close it due to new possible variants imo.

They should have done this in March 2020 though not January 2021. Clowns

Don’t think it’s ever too late to do this. The less virus you import the sooner you get control of it.

I always wonder, if every country had done this (close border, hard lockdown) back in March 2020, what’s the world like right now?

Sure it’s not easy, but I don’t think it’s impossible. And the damage may not be this bad. Millions of lives could have been saved at least.

I’m at the point now where I might unfollow anything remotely news related, life is just so fucking depressing right now :man_facepalming:t3:

I am reaching the point of fuck it

I just try and stay safe and follow the rules. Beyond that there’s really nothing but misery to be gained by still following this closely. I watch In The Night Garden instead of the news now.

Because we can eliminate it once numbers eventually drop this time.

You’re right this is way too long in happening but better late than never.

If we do that this summer, then next winter could be a much better situation and we could be open within the country by then.

The government will open its legs again in summer just like last year and we’ll be in the same situation again this time next year.

I have no confidence in them lol
