Cesc Fabregas

How did this thread go from us having a cathartic cry over Cesc to hating the Midlands?

@BizzySignal Santi is criminally underrated and seems like a solid dude

Yeah I agree with this, I remember thinking we would win the league in ‘08 because we were top of the table for so long, and really should of won it. Really couldn’t believe the way imploded from February of that year.

It’s funny because subsequently imploding from February became our thing for a couple of seasons after that, before flipping on its head and us being shit from the beginning of the season and going on a run from Feb/March until the end of the season for top 4.

Man it’s always painful looking back at that period, that’s the point where I started to really dislike Wenger and the board.

@Joshua i don’t know bro, every club has someone like that, we’re the fans adore them and think that player is world class when they are not.

I recall 2011 being some season.

Out of 4 competitions in the space of a fortnight

Yep, agree with this.

Santi was an impeccable player. Loved watching him play. But world class? Nah

I don’t know either, Birmingham has one of the top symphony orchestras in the world but I couldn’t tell you much else about it.

I studied at Aston University. That wasn’t bad.

Flop is definitely a harsh description

Birthplace of heavy metal and because of that alone it should get world heritage status.

You’ve gotta pay to get into it and you’ve gotta pay to get around Birmingham now.

I don’t agree with you about this one bro. Santi wasn’t world class and he didn’t have the career or the numbers to support any idea that he was. Cesc was legitimately a generational midfield talent who probably didn’t live up to lofty expectations.

Fabregas time at Barcelona is not as simple as it seems. He didn’t flop because he wasn’t good enough, when he arrived he started very strongly but there was a lot of tactical tinkering and playing him in unfamiliar roles that ruined his time there. Fabregas and Barcelona were made for each other, but he joined at the wrong time and his ability to flourish was hindered by the unfamiliar roles he occupied and how frequently he was moved around.

Cesc numbers are as good as any midfielder that has ever played football. You can’t dispute the numbers and the key role he played in some great teams. I’d say without a shadow of a doubt that Cesc was world class and not succeeding at Barcelona isn’t anything to be ashamed of. He still posted some great numbers there, a lot of goals, a lot of assists. He just never truly managed to find a place in a team with probably the greatest midfield trio ever.

Birmingham is the greatest city in the world

Tommy Shelby? Is that you?

Fair point and I respect you and @JakeyBoy opinions but it seems that his career started to take a bit of downward trajectory at that point and he never received the same plaudits from fans after his time at Arsenal.

In my opinion when we say world class we say it to loosely now, I’m guilty of it as well but like compare Cesc to Zidane, guy was world class at Juve then went to Real and took it to another level. I wouldn’t consider them both the same level of world class. And as such in my opinion when using world class Zidane would be and Cesc wouldn’t.

In my opinion Cesc was world class at Arsenal, then peaked and was no longer world class when he left Barca. Weird one really.

It’s not even the greatest city in the West Midlands, Joshua :winking_face_with_tongue:

For Fabregas to have had the career his ability suggested, where do y’all think he should’ve gone after leaving Arsenal in 2011?

Real? Bayern? Juventus? England?

Would have preferred Accrington Stanley.
