Wojciech Szczesny

That’s the reason I said it’s not as criminal as it’s being made out. It was still low no doubt, but Woj wasn’t worth a whole lot more even at the time. I think his reputation was what hindered us getting a bigger price for him and the length of time left on his deal.

His podcast with arsenal is really good.

Says his 13/14 season was his best arsenal season and he believed he was the best keeper in the league then in the best team in the league.

Says he had a terrible 14/15 season due to poor form and a long standing injury and deservedly lost his place.

He really regrets having to leave arsenal as he wanted to be a Giggs, Totti and spend his whole career there and that he really thought he would come back to the club in 2017 and have a chance to become number 1 again after proving himself at Roma for two seasons.

Wenger and his old boys club :laca:

Negligence is the word. No wonder things declined here. Shortcomings never addressed. All clubs overhaul these things. It’s a shocking oversight in so many departments and it’s not on the stadium either.

Coaching staff was definitely out of date during the latter years, one of the areas Fergie was ahead of Wenger at with refreshing the staff. Pat Rice would probably still be assistant manager if he didn’t step down.

I can’t be too fussed on us selling him, mind you. He was calamitous.

He played 180 games here. He really wasn’t.

Almunia played a lot of games, too. While Woj wasn’t as bad, playing a lot of games doesn’t tell the whole story.

Calamitous is a stretch tbh, it wasn’t Almunia levels of bad. He had some errors in his game but they were fixable. Sadly another club decided to do that.

Them errors wouldn’t have been sorted here though. We didn’t address them things and as he points out the set up was lacking.

He was a young keeper who made few mistakes.
Always had enough confidence in him to better himself.

Every club has more than one goalkeeping coaches. Why didn’t we assign a different coach to Szczesny?

Probably a better assessment tbf

Tony Roberts worked alongside Gerry was always fairly close with Szczesny and Fabianski. I reckon he’s the coach being referred to in the section above.

You could also see the raw talent with Woj, if the club couldn’t coach the mistakes out of him that says more about the club than it does Woj.

Almunia played lots of games because Wenger was a dummy. Woj got in the team when he wrestled the spot form the festering corpse of Almunias career. He rightly retained the spot once he got it.

Woj should have probably been dropped after the league cup final debacle of 2011. He had plenty of opportunities here but wasn’t as good as Lehmann and Seaman. (He made more errors than just that cup final btw)

Lehmann, on the other hand, was ruthlessly dropped after 2 mistakes in the opening 2 games of 07/08. Weird.

Lehmanns dropping was bullshit and I’ve spoken against it many times. I don’t see why we would drop Woj for Kos’ mistake in 2011.
