William Saliba (case closed)

You realise nearly every transfer is paid in installments? Exception being Cazorla where we got him for nearly half his value because the selling club were close to defaulting on paying wages and needed all the cash up front.

Also when we do a deal with Celtic it will be in installments. Celtic don’t have a problem with installments they have a problem with none guaranteed add on payments. IE they get 20m but 25m if we win the league etc

What I find curious about the whole installments thing is that it doesn’t make much of an accounting difference since transfer fees are amortized anyway, so this seems like purely a cash-flow thing, which is ridiculous b/c we are sitting on a pile of cash… I mean as a standard practice, i totally get it - and it is good to negotiate smart contracts in general… just seems for RIGHT NOW, that we should be prioritizing getting deals done and lubricating them appropriately with our specific advantages (reserves).

In the end it doesn’t matter b/c this lad (Tierney) is injured, but in general this installments thing seems extremely odd for us atm.

I had actually not heard of it myself until I was looking for some stuff about Cahill when he was linked to a possible loan move to Arsenal in January. Zonal Marking did a piece back in 2012 about why he would be a good fit for Chelsea. At the time he was coming off a season at 1.9 per game with Bolton and he had some 1.5 seasons early on at Chelsea, but as he got older he dropped off to around 0.7/0.8 in recent seasons (he did have a 1.5 in the Champions League last season, but in a small sample size of four games).

Just for perspective, Van Dijk was at 1.1 last season and Harry Maguire was 0.8. Of course what it might mean is a matter of debate and might depend somewhat on a club’s defensive tactics (Bolton led the league in offsides won when he was there).

I know you can find it at WhoScored. If you click on the defensive tab, you’ll find a column for offsides. That’s it. There are all sorts of crazy and obscure statistics out there these days.

Cool. Thanks!

Break it down.

We are not paying €30m all at once. It’s in installments - and for a player of such talent and potential, also taking into account the fees going around for average players, for me this is a very smart signing. But yes, time will tell of course. Can’t afford another “Varane mistake.”

Which club makes these payments actually in once? I’m not sure that is how it works. Juventus is going to pay for De Ligt in 6 installments. I have the feeling that what is normal practice is been made way to important by some here.

You’ve seen Saliba play on the regular? €30 million for an 18-year old, no matter how you put, is a lot. Now if the regime has confidence in the lad that is fine. But not sure you should call it clever.

Yea the ideal scenario for a buying club is to pay the fee over the length of the contract signed. It’s effectively cost neutral from an accounting point of view then because of amortisation.

It’s bizarre that this installments narrative has started floating around this summer when it’s basically always been the way business has been done.

I think it’s just the nature of the world we live in when you give out some shitty information like Arsenal are more skint than anyone else this window. You’re asking for this kind of nonsense to be clickbaited all over the web and people to lap it up.
