Cahill found himself the odd man out when Sarri switched to a 4-man back, but he’s still a quality player. He’s been a very durable player as well, so basically the opposite of Koscielny (Cahill hasn’t missed time through injury since the middle of the 2015-16 season and then only a few games). So if they can’t find anyone more long-term I’d be happy to sign him on for a year, maybe even with an option. I think Arsenal’s plan before Koscielny’s conniption fit was for him to leave next summer and Saliba to replace him. Saliba could just replace Cahill instead. But I’m still holding out hope that by some miracle they can move Mustafi and bring in a replacement for him.

Cahill was also a bad fit because Sarri likes to play a very high line and Cahill just doesn’t have the speed and athleticism anymore (if he ever did) for that kind of football.

The problem is that Emery also likes to play a very high line.

Actually, Cahill used to regularly lead the league in offsides won (being the deepest defender when a side catches an opponent offside) and usually by some margin. Certainly age is catching up with him, but probably less so than Koscielny to be honest. He’s not, of course, a perfect solution, nor would he be a long term one, but if it’s a choice between playing time for Cahill or Mustafi I’d take Cahill all day long.
