Nah it’s a quality 90’s action film. Back when action films were actually good. Kind of surprised you haven’t seen it tbh.
Yeah I guess so. There’s definitely some shit in the film but it’s endearing and the film is nicely shot and lowkey so it always feels quite believable even when it totally isn’t. It’s a totally unique film too for lots of reasons. I personally think it’s better than Die Hard.
I was actually going to say it’s a bit like saying Die Hard is shit but in a good way. Which I suppose you could say, but then again I wouldn’t as although it’s a silly action film it’s still really good at what it wants to do. Point Break is the same.
After watching the second trailer for Tenet, I re-watched Dunkirk last night…fantastic film by Christopher Nolan…and a great score by Zimmer.
Where would you put it against, say, Con Air or The Rock?
Because I genuinely love both of those films, but would definitely still describe them as films that are “(kinda) shit but in a (very) good way”
Face/Off for me is the king of this weird little sub genre of nineties action films that I’ve made up. Nicolas Cage in his absolute fucking prime.
I guess I’m asking if Point Break is in this same category? I assumed so based on Keanu’s anguished cry and discharging of a whole clip into the sky as seen in Hot Fuzz lol
Fair play…yeah they both work so well because they just feel so damn authentic.
I like it better than those. But Point Break has a different vibe entirely so you may disagree.
Honestly growing up I absolutely adored Nic Cage’s little trilogy of great action films there. As Strangepass says Point Break definitely has a different vibe but is still a great action film in itself. It’s kind of like if they made Heat more fun to watch.
Me personally I would actually say I prefer Con Air, Face/Off, The Rock, but that’s just me I fucking loved those films and would put them above the classic actions like Die Hard, Lethal Weapons etc. I honestly don’t know why it’s so hard to make a decent action when the 80’s and 90’s churned them out for fun. Ironically Hot Fuzz is legitimately a great, fun action film because it’s satirically in love with all those movies.
Anyone got any good Netflix series’ recommendations?
You seem quite sophisticated, so this is probably not the right place to ask for recommendations
Dead Set if it’s on there and you enjoy all things zombie
It’s not on Netflix, but Normal People on BBC iPlayer is great in my personal opinion.
Worth a binge. Only 30 minute episodes as well.
Point Break is a classic. One of my favourite old school action movies
He asked for series though
Good job I wasn’t talking to him then
Oh, fair enough. You’re probably best placed to answer his question though. Unless you don’t want series’.
Ozark is the best series on Netflix imo
Bit early to recommend as have only seen the first episode of six, but Trial by Media seems like a Netflix documentary series you might dig. The name is pretty clear so won’t elaborate, you can check it out if interested.
If you want drama, Ozark, as @Jules said. That’d as good as it gets on Netflix* A little less well known though is Mindhunter, which I think is a really solid crime show, its loosely based on two guys who basically pioneered the profiling of serial killers. It’s not without flaws, but it’s not as widely known as it deserves to be. A solid 7/8 or so out of 10.
*along with Better Call Saul which is actually a level above tbh, but I figure you must have heard of it and are either interested or not.
Not sure if your tastes are too discerning, but House of Cards is trashy, over the top drama at its finest. For the first two or three series anyway, slowly declines as it goes on tbf. Might be venturing way too far into obvious territory with everything after the asterisk.
Yeah Ozark is really good.
All depends on your interests really. Stranger Things does it for some people, but not for me. I prefer all the crime stuff.
Better Call Saul is great. I enjoyed You. White Lines, which has recently been added, is good. There are also so many good documentary series’ on there as well. My Netflix watch list will probably take me until I die.
Nic Cage is absolutely iconic for those 90s blockbuster action movies. The Rock is my personal favourite out of the ones he made in that era, but it was a great decade for OTT action movies. Speed, Die Hard, Demolition Man, True Lies, Broken Arrow etc. Classic shit
Yeah Mindhunter is good. If only for the interviews with Ed Kemper
