What side are you on JB? :boxing_glove:

Interesting, do you know what the numbers were for the previous season?

Funny that I bothered to go through transfermarkt to figure this out given my last post lol

It looks like he scored 11 of his 29 league goals against teams who finished in the top ten, with two of those being penalties.

So 9 non pen goals versus top ten sides versus 6 so far this season.

Nice one, not a bad return tbh last season

I think strikers can very much be flat track bullies to an extent, Haaland does this for example

From what I’ve seen from Gyökeres I think he’s perfectly capable of being a difference maker against better teams.

Time will tell wherever he does end up

Being a flat track bully is a low quality league is different to being one in a top league though… it doesn’t bode well

Perhaps you’re right and who truly knows. However, I think he’s the best available attainable option and I’d prefer this risk above others.

I’m going to be excited regardless of who we sign but I’m getting Lacazette vibes from him (not in terms of style just his numbers being inflated by penalty goals and his age).

Ive been scammed by twitter again. Maybe the tweet said top half.

I remember being hyped for Lacazette and the numbers he was putting down in Ligue 1.

Funnily enough he’s been putting down those numbers since rejoining.

I also remember Seferovic and Jackson Martinez having some big seasons in the Portuguese league.

I’ll believe it when I see it with Gyokeres. These lower leagues are rarely indicative.

He’s not a striker but Bruno Fernandes seems to have coped very well from going from the Portuguese league to the Premier League

From the Eredivisie Afonso Alves, Kezman, Huntelaar, Janssen, L. de Jong. Players like Suarez and Falcao who can replicate it at the next level seem like exemptions.

That’s fair enough all those guys have some things that give you pause when assessing them which speaks to the the dearth of the striker market in recent years

All carry inherent risk, I’d just rather go with the guy who looks ready right now and has a good all round game not just bringing goals rather than the one who probably needs more seasoning and time to mature in Sesko.

Those aren’t the only two options though as Ekitike interests me as well

I wasn’t saying that, I’ve assumed your stat is true. I went to try and quickly figure out how many non-penalty league goals he scored vs top ten clubs in the 2023/24 season. You were talking about this season, right?

Edit: just realised that the Portuguese league has 18 teams, I assumed it had 20 like ours. In which case, the tweet probably said “top half” rather than “top ten”.

The two penalties Gyokeres scored against top ten teams in 23/24 came against the team in tenth lol, so 9 non penalty goals remains the total even if we switch to “top half”

Tbf isn’t that what we need? Our record in big games is okay, we need to beat the lower quality teams more which is where we struggle

Unlike you and those in the Sesko camp, I really know very little about either player. So I’m going off vibes and pure assumptions. So on a very superficial level… give me the guy scoring a hatful of goals over the guy who isn’t lol (@Calum)

Our window for success with this group of players really could end soon, and after our failure to challenge for the league this season, and our probable third second placed finish in a row, I really am all in on next season lol. Centre forward and left wing are key positions, and I want to see signings who will be starters and justify that starting berth via their output. I really don’t want players who will be mostly mediocre in 25/26 but “promise” to be top class in another season or two.
