:pen:.

MacAllister knew exactly what he was doing, he saw Doku shaping his body to play the ball with a high foot and went in like he did precisely thinking he might get caught by the follow through and win a penalty.

It would be shit to decide a massive and entertaining match by giving a penalty in a non-threatening situation with 20 seconds left because a player intentionally put himself in the way like that. Football is better when referees err on the side of letting the players determine the result. And I don’t care at all if it would have been a foul elsewhere on the pitch, everybody knows the standards are different in the box and they need to be given what penalties are worth.

It was clumsy by Doku, but it was a 50-50 moment that wouldn’t be a foul for me anywhere on the pitch.
MacAllister touches the ball but is not in control of it, and then Doku touches the ball but is not in control of it.

I think MacAllister initiates the contact, Doku is only looking to play the ball, whilst Mac has seen the man and is hoping for the contact for a pen.

That said, I think it is subjective and there will be people in similar numbers on both sides.

The extent to which MacAllister is looking for that is almost enough to call it simulation.

Clear pen, even if McAllister does overreact to the contact.

I’m having a hard time understanding why so many people feel this was a blatant pen. Sure the foot is high but he wins the ball first, is he supposed to not make a challenge when the opposition player is trying to get possession of the ball in the box?

Of course it would likely be a foul in the middle of the pitch, but this wasn’t the middle of the pitch and everyone knows the bar is way higher for what referees will give in the box. If you were to watch some of the commentary this morning having not seen it, you’d think Doku karate kicked Macalister and broke his skull based on some of the reactions.

He doesn’t win the ball. He barely touched it.

He does touch it though, which is the crucial part of it all for me. At the end of the day regardless of the high leg, what we have is a player getting a touch on the ball to take possession away from the attacking player, even if minimal contact is also made with him afterwards. If that’s a penalty then we need to start giving them out for fun by that standard.

If he had won the ball, and then hit the player. Then I would agree.

But that didn’t happen. He tickled the ball, and kicked the player.

Yeah it’s right on the edge and there’s enough grey area for me given the high standard (usually) for what it takes to get a penalty, I just don’t think you give that one at that stage of a match of that magnitude. If you’re giving one side a penalty in a match which could potentially decide where the title is going, it has to be stonewall for me. This isn’t.

It’s 1-1 at the Etihad, and Rodri does that to Odegaard in the dying seconds.

This forum would implode.

Another terrible thing about that shitty decision, is if City beat Liverpool to the title by less than 3 points, we are never going to stop hearing about how Liverpool were robbed of a title.

If we win the title by a single point to that scouse lot, I will be forever happy to hear them bleat about VAR…

I genuinely wouldn’t, I’d understand why it wasn’t given. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that anyhow

Sorry to kill the mood but this needs to be raised.

Havertz escaped a horrific injury v Wolves and the same for Tomiyasu.

Jackson today should have been sent off. How VAR did not even look into it is unbelievable.

If the shirts were swapped, it’d be an instant red for our guys — no VAR required.

What makes it worse is that VAR did look at it and determined it was worthy of a yellow. And since VAR can’t give yellows then it stayed as nothing.

Should be more focus on retrospective bans for challenges like this. Happens perfectly fine in other sports but somehow the world’s biggest sport has a fucking issue with doing this.

Shocking. And it’s not as if we need to make our case any stronger given the history (Diaby, Ramsey, Eduardo etc).

In rugby especially i think this contributes to the overall standard of refereeing and ultimately the game itself.

There is no fear about getting something wrong. If ultimately you do that, someone else will spot it and hand out the punishment at a later date. And the players know too there isn’t any escape and I think that makes them more conscious of how they play the game.

The PL could be leaders here, but…

They are focused on making the on pitch ref the star of the show.
The moment they drop that non-sense, we will see sensible implementation of VAR.
