US Police and Black People

Only 82 in nearly 38 years I am shocked

They have resigned to having one dead kid per household. American couples plan two kids now.

82 is only?

And somehow gun control won’t help.

Haha yeah sure dude

Don’t get me started. I’m ex-Navy where I was a Gunner’s Mate and trained on small arms (and missiles) and have never owned a gun, not do I ever plan on owning a gun. Although I don’t mind going to a firing range and shooting a few rounds.

I feel you on this, but it’s really only in the last few years that I’ve started feeling a lot more strongly about this.

I could not imagine a worse first world western country to raise your kids in that the US. The violence and crime is insane, the politics are insane, the level of religion is insane. I’m not entirely sold on the idea of having kids but if I did I’d loathe to raise them in America, but I can’t exactly tell my girlfriend that when’s she American and her entire family live in Chicago.

The only place I would consider raising children is rural U.K. or Denmark.

Denmark particularly because the benefits you get are just out of this world.

Yeah def the northern countries for me. I grew up in the UK in the 80s, knife violence has however escalated since then. Sure, there’s crime here to but nowhere near the levels of the USA.
And the benefits can’t be beaten.

Tell me about it. And the ā€˜leader’ of the ā€˜free’ world at that. It’s a joke. It’s been on a downward spiral for at least a decade. I left at the end of 2007 (first living in Dublin and now in London for 10 year) and I’ve never looked back.

Well, I’m American with my family in PA and I would seriously have the discussion if kids were involved. But definitely would need to be sensitive as there are quite a few American mums in the UK who do nothing but moan about here. I have my issues with the UK (the education system being one of my biggest issues, especially having spent 8 years as a teacher here), but I’m look at alternatives and remind myself have much better it here for me than the US.

My wife is Dutch and we’ve had serious conversations about moving the NL. Prefer the education system there to the UK and love the culture for children. Denmark has come up as well, but we are a bit worried about integration and language. We already use English and Dutch. Danish may not be too difficult to learn. Spain is another place, but not during Covid. My in-laws live in rural Ireland. As much as I love the Irish, culturally the UK is a better fit for me.

Tell me about it  Some of the things they moan about are ridiculous as well, like the washing machines not being NASA spaceship level high tech or the lack of kitchen islands and other stupid first world bullshit lol

I guess the thing that pulls my girlfriend towards America the most is that she would want to be close to her mum if she had a baby, rather than the country itself which she does think is fucked.

That said I do think Target and the Container Store and random American stores like that really make her miss the US.

However, I think for every visit to Copenhagen she falls more and more in love and I also remember her mum and step-dad saying ā€œFuck she is so moving to Copenhagen, why wouldn’t she?!ā€ when they came and stayed in Denmark for a week and we spent all our time biking around and stuff.

RE: Denmark, it wouldn’t be hard language wise. Your son would pick up Danish quickly and Danish is very similar to Dutch which lowers the barrier for you guys somewhat, and everyone speaks good English anyway.

However if your partner is Dutch then NL does make a bit more sense realistically (as much as I love selling Denmark haha).

Easier to outrun a knife than a bullet.

I get that. We haven’t been back since Oct 2018 and it sucks. I have 15 nieces and nephews and my son loves being with the ones close to his age. Covid has really hit us as we haven’t been able to see any family. It really sucks. He also has two cousins in the NL, one just born and another a few months younger, so would love to visit again. No idea if we’ll be able to go for Christmas even.

It definitely helps. Gun crime is generally far less prevalent in countries with stricter gun control than it is in the US, that’s a fact.

So that’s a no it doesn’t stop people getting illegal guns.

As I’ve already said to you, nobody said that it totally stops people from obtaining illegal weapons. The position is that it helps, and my evidence is the entire Western world basically having gun control and lower levels of gun crime than the US, who have far less gun control.

Give me an actual explanation for why you disagree
instead of trying to shut the conversation with this bullshit ā€œso that’s a no thenā€, because you haven’t even scored a point yet, let alone won a debate lol.

My question was simple, does it stop people getting illegal guns? The answer is no. I am not debating I asked a question.

Gun control so what? People find other means I.e knives

The Las Vegas shooter killed 59 (including himself in that) and injured a further 413 with gunfire. Couldn’t have done that with a fucking knife could he you doughnut?

Funny in the U.K. over 9000 gun incidents, yet in Manchester alone last year 44,000 knife incidents

According to @k1tsun3 Statista knives and cutting instruments are third most used things to kill people.

Those numbers look like that cos we have gun control!! If we had gun laws more like the US, and guns were readily available, you’d have fewer instances of knife crime and way more instances of gun crime. Which obviously would not be a good thing, because despite your unwillingness to address the point, a violent person with a gun is far more dangerous to a larger number of people than a violent person with a knife is.
