I’m confused why they wanted to connect it to Batman. I thought the whole point of the Joker is that we don’t know why he’s the Joker or who he was before. If Todd Phillips wanted to remake Taxi Driver why didn’t he just do that?
Because people will flock to see a dedicated Joker movie in a way they never would for a generic, non-franchise associated reworking of Taxi Driver.

Was Batman referenced in the second movie, because I don’t recall it happening in the first?
Arthur meets bruce in the first film at Wayne manor gates. Cant remembers tho why arthur was their tho. But batman doest exist at this point
Quite simply because the Joker is one of the all time great characters, and before Todd Phillips, there hasn’t been a standalone film of him before.
Yes, several times. Firstly as @Lister86 mentions above, he meets Bruce at the gates of Wayne Manor, because his Mother says Thomas Wayne was his father and at the end of the film after anarchy breaks out, you see someone in a Joker mask kill Thomas and Marta Wayne in an alleyway in front of Bruce, a very brilliant addition to the film as this juxtaposes with the rise of the Joker.
Not sure about the sequel, as I’ve not seen it yet, but I’m personally more fascinated by the relationship between him and Harley Quinn.
Isn’t that because the Joker only works as in opposition to Batman? Like whether you want the silly and harmless 60s version, the animated cackling 90s version or the domestic terrorist 00s version, it’s all reactionary.

Should have been a one and done, that series absolutely doesn’t need a sequel, though it was always gonna happen after the show unexpectedly became a global phenomenon.
Will give it a chance though obvs and see if they’ve kept the quality up.
