Unpopular football opinions

In some periods in his last Barca season or his first season or two in PSG for me he was the best player in the world, just never stayed fit enough to show that throughout the whole season/year.

His dribbling, creativity, finishing, inside the box, outside the box, pace…
Incredible how he refined his game over the years, I used to compare him to Gervinho when he just came to Barca, but he became a brilliant passer/playmaker later on.

If he has half of Messi/Ronaldo discipline he’d be an absolute monster.

Thinking about United and Ten Hag atm… got me Dusan Tadic.

What an absolute football god he became since joining Ajax. He showed a lot of quality and class in that Southampton team, but got to a totally different level when he joined a team that relies more on technique than power.

In 2018/19 he was ridiculously overlooked for the Ballon d’Or. Should’ve been in top 10 easily, imo top 5 definitely (top 3 tbh). Beyond rediculous, playing as a false 9 that season. Everything he touched was pure gold. A mix of Zidane and Van Persie that year. The technique, the touch, the vision, finishing, dribbling. He was just on another level.

Absolutely one of the most enjoyable footballers to watch in the last 5-10 years.

Yeah he was incredible and it really just kind of came out nowhere.

he played god tier level football. However, it seems to be pretty obvious why he was overlooked - the Eredivisie isn’t exactly top level football.

Wasn’t that the season where Ajax beat Real Madrid and he single-handedly basically made them look like a bunch of amateurs??

Yeah, obviously I’m not basing this on his league performances. He was ridiculous in the CL in basically every game, toying with Madrid, brilliant against Juve, Tottenham… Imo MVP in the CL that season.

Yup Ajax destroyed Real Madrid and Juve but then somehow collapsed vs Spurs :rage:

One of the biggest bottle jobs in the CL recently.

The better team for the 2/3 of the tie, had the result, and just handed everything to Spurs right at the end. Lucas Moura…

Mark Randall should have been given a chance at Arsenal

Ryan Giggs wasn’t that great, his numbers weren’t really that impressive and he only gets praise because of how long he played for

Couldn’t disagree more! Giggs was an absolute wizard. Very possibly the best winger in the world for a stretch. Think he was better than Figo, who was also class.

The truth hurts for him, that’s why he can’t admit it now

Numbers wise. You mean like 13 League titles, 4 FA cups, 2 CLs etc.
Yeah right.

as in goals/assists

he was in a dominant United for years so he has a lot of trophies

even wes brown has a lot of trophies

Yeah I know what you mean. He is thought of so highly because of longevity. Like those trophies Stroller just mentioned - I don’t think Giggs was especially instrumental in those. He just became part of the furniture in the end. He is basically Ian Beale.

Not saying he was shit. Just over rated. And I probably wrote it in this thread already, but that goal he scored against us that everyone had orgasms about wasn’t even that good either. No one challenged him! I will die on this hill. Want it on my headstone.

Can’t think of any trophy that giggs was instrumental in…

Certainly not in a treble winning season.

Swear giggs and scholes get a load of stick and I don’t get it. They were both great players even if they played for united.

Giggs and Scholes two overrated shit heads.

His best season ever he got 13 goals and 7 assists.

His next best season was 10 goals and 11 assists.

Every season apart from those two he was in the single digits for goals and assists except for maybe 4 seasons where he got ~11 assists.

He was a good winger but I think if you put him in any other team he wouldn’t stand out. He benefited from being a part of that United team and also gets a lot of hype for his longevity.

Never really turned up for Wales either, certainly not in the way that Bale and Ramsey did/do.

Remind us again when you started watching football.

Saka and Martinelli will get that easily this season and are both 21

Those numbers for a left mid in those days were really good :man_shrugging:

He’s not gonna match up to mo salah modern day inside forward numbers, but he spent most of his PL career averaging a goal or assist every 2 games with a few season at every 3 games.

Take 97/98 as an example:

Overmars 12 goals and 5 assist (17 total) in 32 games
Giggs 8 goals and 9 assist (17 total) in 29 games

Giggs basically did that for 20 years running.
