I have never seen Maradona play live but there isn’t (or perhaps I haven’t come across) any highlights of his creativity to help his fellow players. It’s a curse of yesteryears that it is perhaps not archived as well.
Messi does the dribbling that Maradona is revered for but couples that with extra ordinary vision (running the play, cutting passes etc) and consistent high level goal scoring.
Add to that his high output in terms of free kicks.
Messi can play in every position in attacking half and perhaps could do a decent job as wingback as well if played.
I will believe there is as much rounded player out there as Messi but I don’t think they will be as consistent.

Whenever DFB played against the Maradona’s national team, I was scared (of course not the players themselves)… really, I never felt good, NEVER.
Even he was drugged, drunk, or might had fucked a couple of girls during half time, he could still scare you.
On the other hand, I felt comfortable when DFB play against Messi’s team.
I knew he could be handled, manhandled, shadowed.

Quite a number.
Maybe even Messi himself did not know why he lost and how he lost.
I have never seen Maradona had that kind of facial expression (maybe he was drugged). He lost, because he just lost to a better them, but you could tell, he never lost his confidence and belief.
Maybe Messi is a bit better than Maradona “technically” (which I don’t agree)… maybe.
But this mental thing, there is a huge gap, HUGE.

Its an interesting take and obviously they are both two of the very, very best to grace the football pitch. To me, the complete body of work at club weighs more b/c national teams can be a crapshoot and a shambles - lots of stars on that team who can get criticized.
I just think Messi is a kind of transcendent talent on his own little level. Obviously plenty of players on that next tier, which isn’t far behind - Maradona among them.
I respect your opinion.
There is no right or wrong, or definite answer, especially we are comparing two players from two different era.

When he was at his peak Maradonna was the best player ever.
He went to Napoli, who were mid table and then they either won the title or were runners up for the next four seasons.
When he left they went back to mid table again.
For Argentina, he did the same thing.
He won the World Cup with them, and it was like watching a football coach playing in a junior team.
He was not only easily Argentina’s best player, he was the best player in the World Cup by quite a distance.
Up until Messi, I’ve never seen such a good player that was so clearly better than every other player in the teams he played for.
The difference between him and Messi, is that Messi plays for one of the greatest teams ever seen, alongside world class players, but Maradonna played for a mid table club team and a decent Argentina team and was instrumental in both sides success.
I would rate him as the most influential player that’s ever played the game.
He was an absolutely incredible footballer.
