Suppose I’ll be the one to dissent and say I absolutely disagree. There should be a general election. Actually the Tories are a good example of how this was completely abused rather than it being acceptable (I guess the people accept but you know what I mean). They kept changing the jackass in charge and rather than it ensuring stability it kept getting worse. Not really my problem if Labour faces electoral destruction. They could’ve chosen not to suck. Would’ve been nice if the Tories didn’t get rewarded for such bad behaviour and foist such a bad culture in politics the past 14 years and got booted out in first instance but I can’t change that.
Also many ‘local representatives’ are parachuted in and we know the main purpose of parachuted MP’s. What’s meant to happen in theory and what is actually happening are different things.
They won’t win a General Election despite getting a landslide in the local elections.
The Reform vote will be split with the Tories and Restore, which is why Labour won with such a low vote.
Farage is a chancer who pretends to be a man of the people but is really just part of the establishment and people are seeing through him.
But on the other side of the political spectrum is Polanski, another opportunist who, like Farage, is only interested in power and will say what his supporters want to here no matter how stupid or controversial.
As bad as Starmer and Badenoch are, at least they’re more centrist, so if they address some of the big issues that voters are concerned about, they are more likely to win.
People act like the Tories were forced on the UK, I hate to break it to people but the 14 year thing is a massive misconception. Right or wrong, the Tories and their policies were broadly popular amongst the electorate for the majority of the time they were in power.
They won 3 GE in the period and 2 majorities. That wasn’t people giving them the benefit of the doubt.
Fact is, things only went off the rails when covid started, even before that BJ was the most popular tory PM ever and had the party polling at 50%.
It seems to me like a lot of the electorate across the spectrum are determined to reject the mainstream parties. It feels like Reform have fallen off since allowing ex-Boris Tories in. And the Greens growth likewise seems to be people who want to vote against Reform but can’t stomach the two main parties.
I dont recognise the position or person you are arguing against. Who doesn’t understand that the reason the Tories were in power for fourteen years is because the British public kept electing them?
It’s not that, but the people bear some responsibility for voting for the governments they got.
They knew what Boris was and gave him a historic majority.
They seen tories wreck the country in coalition and decided what they needed was full Tory without lib dem breaks even though Gordon brown and ed miliband would have been decent and not ruined the country in the way it has been.
All because Miliband looked weird eating a sandwich.
The British public, especially greedy triple locked pensioners bear responsibility for what they have had wrought on them
I see that. I could write for hours about the ways in which our Parliament needs to be completely reformed and modernised with stricter rules for MPs than they face currently.
I won’t bore everyone with my proposals. But as I’ve said before, when I’m running for the top job (or doing a coup to get it), my campaign slogan is “There will be changes” and those who have been plundering taxpayers’ money for their own gain have the most to fear from those changes. They can expect levels of scrutiny usually only reserved for DWP applications for disabled people who try to claim £75 per week because they’re too ill to work.
