I know nothing about how the xG and xA methodology works, just too lazy to read up on it. But if thatās what itās based on, then yeah - absolutely agree
So depends on what version of these you look at, but xg for a player is basically the accumulation (per game usually) of xg for each chance taken (an āattemptā).
It uses historical data from samples of āsimilarā situations, across some population of players (presumably all in a league).
So xg in theory is a measure of how much a player:
- Makes āattemptsā
- The quality of the āattemptsā
So if a player takes a LOT of bad (ie unlikely to score based on historical data) attempts, they could be similar to a player who gets ONE very good attempt hypothetically.
xA is more interesting in a way b/c it is (according to Opta), agnostic to whether a shot was taken or notā¦ so they look for a) Key passes (however that is defined by said system); and then b) the rate at which attempts from similar passes score (how often they become assists).
It is an interesting and theoretically sound metric system, but obviously has its set of challenges and probably continues to evolve and improve over time. What is important is to interpret and analyze the data in full appreciation for what it actually is.

My wishlist or Jan/this summer:
Mkhi sold to Roma - replacement Ziyech.
He has a clause. He likes the club. Shouldnāt be too difficult to make happen.
Xhaka sold - replacement
Mustafi sold - replacement. Some colossus pls lads. Iād be beside myself if they somehow pulled off Kola + cash for Koulibally. But in that case, weād need a LB for depth.
Lacazette sold - Can replace with Moussa Dembele.
Do that and weāre back.

Ziyech would be a great signing.
If Bellerin, Tierney, Pepe and Ziyech could play in the same line up, we would have the width and quality for either Aubameyang or Lacazette.
He has got a decent shot on him from free kicks as well.
We certainly need at leat one top quality CB as well as a replacement for Xhaka but because we blew a substantial budget last season I canāt see Arteta getting much to spend in the next window or after this season unless he sells Aubameyang or Lacazette.
