Thierry Henry

Why not 2006? :wenger:

That has to be one 2-3 Henry’s best seasons… I’d say 2002/03 was his best one, simply electric that year, closely followed by 2005/06.

I think that season goes overlooked because we only finished 4th, but he was insane that year, literally carried that team on himself when the Invincible generation started to dissolve.

Although there’s not much between all those 4 season in between 2002 and 2006. He was Ballon d’Or level all the while.

You know how legends tend to become anagrammed, i.e., TH14, CR7, well BS7 doesn’t sit quite right with me.

Before watching, the top three for me, in no particular order…

  1. Flick, turn, volley vs Man U
  2. Dribbling 80% of the Spurs side from the halfway line
  3. Twisting up the Liverpool defence and sitting Carragher on his arse in the 4-2 game when our season was on the brink of collapse.

Thierry Henry - Maestro !?

Watched him for half a season and loved every bit of it. Damn I missed out.

We had his best years too. Club legend, still gets me choked-up seeing these videos 20+ years after seeing it the flesh.

Imagine having Campbell, Vieira, Bergkamp and Henry down the spine of your team. We were a corrupt referee away from being Champions of Europe in the end.

We obviously will all have slightly different views on him but I loved watching him play and I think he had that true working-class style of play where he never shirked the dirty work or the tough stuff.

He wasn’t flashy or overly exuberant, but I think the average fan saw a bit of themselves in the workman-like style Henry was known for.

Sure, he wouldn’t have started for the top teams of the day, but he was ever so reliable and very much a perfect “glue guy” alongside more polished superstars.

Henry didn’t get 20 goals and 20 assists 02/03 though, he got 32 goals and 28 assists, this bloke has literally reduced his goal contributions by a third lol.

I get the argument that Juventus’ achievements as a team outweighed Arsenal’s, and we all know that that has always been a big consideration when it comes to awarding the Balon D’Or, so fair enough there, but at least get the most basic statistics right before getting in front of a mic and confidently broadcasting your opinion to the internet lol.

For what it’s worth, team achievements should be less important when considering individual awards. For example, I don’t care if Liverpool won fuck all in 13/14, Suarez scored 31 goals and provided 13 assists in 33 league games, he was the deserved winner of every individual accolade available in England that season.

Also, that guy seems to be 28 years old from some quick googling, so I’m sceptical about how well he remembers Nedved in 02/03. Just not buying that this lad watched enough Serie A as a 7 or 8 year old to be confidently talking about what he remembers of Nedved from that season lol.

Somewhere Gio is fuming as this random bum with a microphone to his face is calling Milan ‘AC’.

I detest the whole focus on team achievement over individual abilities when it comes to deciding the best individual footballer in the world.

That’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time
