2004 Ballon d’Or – Did The Right Player Win It?

Shevchenko won the 2004 Ballon d’Or, but was he a worthy winner? I dive into the stats and overal season of the top players of 2004, including King Henry, and judge them on multiple categories to determine who I think should have won the award. Henry never winning the Balon D’or is a Football Crime. It’s hard to explain how good he is to those who missed out on his best years.

Is it rude to say imagine Salah was a baller, who was fun to watch. Or imagine Haaland actuallly had magic.

Henry was the closest thing we got to prime R9. He was like a not as good version of him but still an exceptionally gifted player who followed the R9 model of being a striker who had much more to his game than just scoring goals.

Outrageous acceleration, very tidy technically, skilful but best of all he had a very mean streak about him and that made him want to win at all costs.

Mbappe had shades of Henry/R9 in him too but he looks to have peaked already.

Nahh, I said it a few times, Nedved winning the Ballon d’Or in 2003 was legit. Him and Henry were about equal.

It would be fair I think if Henry won one award and Nedved the other. I think both awards btw carried the same weight at the time, it’s a bit strange the old FIFA award gets a bit forgotten nowadays (those are combined now).

Btw, Zidane only came up fifth for Ballon d’Or that year. Ridiculous discrepancy.

I was looking at the voting differences between the coaches and players (FIFA World Player of the Year, pre-2010) and the media (Ballon d’Or, pre-2010). Coaches and players tend to vote for the player they consider the absolute best, while the media places greater emphasis on team achievements before recognising the outstanding individual player.

If you rewind to the year 2001, when Michael Owen secured his Ballon d’Or. He only managed 8th place in the FIFA World Player of the Year. Based on my calculations, if all three voting categories were combined, it would have been David Beckham walking away with the Ballon d’Or award for that year.

Also, Ribery and Sneijder would have had a Ballon d’Or to their name if only the media could vote.

60 goal contributions in 55 games for Henry that season. Eliminate all 32 goals he scored and on assists alone he’s still beating Nedved’s goals plus assists total lol.

Some other players played for teams who achieved more, but he was hands down the best player in Europe that season, idgaf.

Honestly, someone tell me which creative midfielders in any of Europe’s top flights bettered Henry’s 28 assists? And he scored 32 bloodclart goals at the same time.

He literally gave us the output of one world class creative midfielder AND a world class centre forward in a single fucking season.

You’re focusing way too much on sheere numbers in the first place.

If you look like that even a guy like Zidane never deserved a single Ballon d’Or because he never really had a super big number of assists (as far as I know), let alone goals.

2003… Prime time Serie A, the best and the biggest league in the world.
Absolutely the best Juve player and their driving force while they won the league that season, and the best player in the league. Obviously was just as important in their CL campaign too, where they literally only lost it in the final on the penalties because he couldn’t play in the final because of the yellow in the semi final. I almost cried when I found out he wont be able to play.

That’s why he fucking deserved the Ballon d’Or.

And btw, I’m saying this as a guy who was discussing Henry is the best player of all times at that time and was better than Maradona.
Henry was an alien at the time and it did took something special to keep up with him and Nedved did it.
