I always wondered if the Balon d’Or had an inherent bias for “prestigious clubs”. Lots of Madrid/Barcelona/Milan/Juventus winners in that period.

Two things stand out for me apart from what’s already mentioned.

First, how the hell did Nedved win the Ballon D’or in 2003 with those stats.

And second, Christian Vieri’s goals to game ratio is ridiculous. I remember him being the best thing about the Italian team in the 2002 World Cup but didn’t know he was such a prolific scorer.

Tbf, Henry not winning the Balloon d’Or did open my eyes about how the award is a complete sham and a joke, which is probably rigged as well, and made me not care much about it there afterwards.
