Eh?
Wenger also turned down the opportunity to sign Diego Lopez when Capello had told him about him so he could persist with Almunia in goal lol.
Could be here all day shutting down the notion that Wenger was anything other than completely in control of the club. The guy basically had unlimited power and nobody to hold him to account. No coincidence his decline coincides with Deon’s departure.
Boring topic really but astonishes me people still peddle the myth that Wenger was hamstrung to the extent that they like to paint lol.

But it is this discipline that made me so angry at Trossard the other match when he put his studs into opponent’s groin. We are in steady pace to win the league, don’t fuck it up for your volatile emotions.
Refs got a different memo ![]()
Seriously though, the same bullshit from last season could never replicate itself so was always going to be better, but we are definitely playing differently and seeing less opportunities to pick up cards because we are holding the ball more. The rare breaks from the other teams are really our only chances to get cards.
Even still we’ve had a few soft ones in both main comps.
That occured to me the other day too.
Last year we were already had those Rice, Trossard and Saliba (I think) red cards that took many vital points away from us in that start phase and have a massive boost to Liverpool and we never recovered.
I’m sure we did something about that, can’t be accidental. For a team that takes care about many details it was beyond frustrating to be losing points in such a cheap way.
I’m confident that I haven’t made it up when there was a period of time where Wilshere and Ramsey were favoured over Santi.
He played 38, 38, 31 and 37 PL games then the injuries came.
I haven’t checked if those were starts or not but i have no conscious memory of Santi being anything other than first choice here prior to the injuries.
Could be post injury but I remember being furious with Wenger for a number of reasons - the disregard of Santi was one.
Yeah, I’ve had a look, I think you’re misremembering. Santi very rarely didn’t start when he was available.
I’m pretty sure you’re wrong. Santi was always a starter while fit. Maybe you mixed it with those periods while he was out injured.
I’m almost certain there was a period where Wilshere and Ramsey were being favoured over Santi.
It’s hard to prove without digging through old team sheets but it was another gripe with Wenger. It stands to reason with him stating we have Wilshere and Ramsey so did not need Cesc to return. All the other shit I labelled against him is easy to prove. Regardless, I couldn’t stand Wenger toward the end of his tenure here.
It was disgusting that we let Cesc play for the chavs, considering he wanted to come back and Arsene apparently blocked that from happening.
That part hurt more than most because it seemed like a moment that could have been a turning point. Ozil, Sanchez and Cesc together would have been biblical.
Cesc then winning the league with Chelsea was heart breaking.
we could have had the invincibles back at their 2003 age and we still wouldnt have won a league title. Wenger didnt have it anymore
I think the Wenger Pre Copying Barcelona still wins titles with a good enough squad. Our big club record was still fine.
Afterwards, nah. He became a trend chaser and was losing his instincts and convictions and was the start of shocking high profile results. He would it do it later again with trying three at the back. Poor imitated setups. It never looked convincing.
League title run over before it began
Damn there really were people out there expecting us not to concede s shot again
For me the season is split into 3 parts
August to November
November to March
March to May
We have been excellent in part 1 and deservedly sit top of the league.
Sunderland are a top side at home and we’ve got several first team attacking players out so a draw isn’t that bad despite us doing enough to win and if we play like that in every game, with a full team, we’ll be fine.
Although this is the point in the season where we are notorious for having a poor run, we’ve got players coming back and more quality in depth than in previous seasons where we’ve dropped points against mediocre opposition.
