The State of The Arsenal

A lot of this is down to Arteta though

Rice plays a shit ton and has done since he became a key player at West Ham him creaking was more than possible, Odegaard was thrown back in as soon as he was deemed fit enough, Havertz was flogged this season and it was obvious it wasn’t sustainable and now looks spent.

Calafiori comes back from injury and is thrown straight back in and made to start three games in a row which was questionable and now surprise surprise is out until who knows when.

Yes, I do accept that Arteta’s unwillingness to use options cost long term availability of players. You look at Lewis-Skelly and wonder why we couldn’t use him instead of playing Calafiori.

Think it is more that the recent toe injury has not healed yet, so despite him coming back is not equaivalent to him being reliable

Would you agree that literally nobody here has said he should be given “forever”?

Its a dramatic post you can allow me a wee bit of hyperbole man lol

Fair enough, just looks like you were presenting a line of argument nobody has put forward, but appreciate that may not have been intended and is just how I read it.

But the argument being made is more that he perhaps deserves a bit of leeway for a few bad months after the past two seasons we’ve had.

I’m all for criticising Arteta but any suggestions about him not being the man are far too premature. Back to back fantastic domestic league campaigns he absolutely deserves to ride the rough periods too.

Well the last 2 tweets are criticisms regarding things he thinks are contributing to us playing poorly. It kinda follows that if you make those statements, you think you have an idea of what would contribute to us not doing poorly.

Of course, this guy never has to actually test any of his hypotheses because he’s a twitter nerd and not actually doing the job.

Most of these guys aren’t “just commenting”, they purposely set up specific profiles on large public platforms to make their views heard and garner clout from others.

I’m not saying he isn’t allowed to, but I was saying I think he’s a fucking nerd cunt and I’m allowed to have that view.

He can have leeway but depending on how the season ends will form how I view him long term going into the next season because he won’t be fired, that much is clear

Like I mentioned if this devolution is who he is now then the window to win the league may have ended last season

This extends beyond a personnel issue, the identity of this team and coach is worrying

This is true, but why must Arsenal be the feeder club for new coaches to do their internship with?

Look at Liverpool, they swiped Klopp at the top of his game, brought them success over 9-years. Then they’ve swiped Slott and he’s doing wonders, they barely bought anyone in the summer.

I believe you give Liverpool’s squad to Arteta of 2019 and he would do wonders as well, perhaps not to same effectiveness as Slot but he wouldn’t need so much time to compete like he needed with Arsenal’s squad

That’s a fair point actually. Arteta has had more work to do cause we were in a sorry state back then.

We had Wenger for 22 years, Emery who was a very experienced coach bow Arteta. How can we be deemed a feeder club?

Liverpool had Rodgers, Hodgson and even a pensioner Dalglaish before they were in the right place and time to nab Klopp.

Maybe both clubs could have done some things better and Liverpool aren’t perfect???

Liverpool had two dip seasons in their title challenger era in 20/21 and 22/23 so they haven’t been perfect every season either.

I am not being defeatist and we certainly haven’t helped ourselves in the transfer market but normal teams not called Manchester City cant be perfect every single season

It’s nature of the dip though tbh

One thing we easily forget is Arteta improved us massively. We use to be defensively a joke, clubs would come to the Emirates and use it as a dance floor, we had real jokers in our team. Now we have an identity, quality crop of players with physical presence, doing extremely well against the ‘big clubs’ and most importantly it’s a healthy environment and there is stability. Back in the Champions league as well.

The issues right now can be fixed very easily. We need 2-3 good signings, especially in the attacking department. We need Arteta to continue learning as a coach (we forget how inexperienced he still is at this level - and how young he is for a coach) by learning he needs to be less cautious and more daring with alternating different ways of playing and being more fluid offensively etc.

It’s a frustrating period, I wouldn’t call it a rough patch. It also doesn’t help when players get chances and they don’t convert them into goals so players need to step up too and stop being passengers.

The return of the Mack

Our dip is still not as bad as Liverpool at this stage two years ago

Exactly. I would go as far as saying that we only need one signing. If we get one really good left winger, we would start producing the requisite quality again.

True, from that side no. But what I mean from nature is the context of how we play and sustainability of it.

@Trion: I don’t think that solves it, raises the floor but we could be just as clueless with a better player or two.

That isn’t a cure all

You could argue Liverpool’s caffeine and inhalers approach wasn’t overly sustainable either. What would you say makes our current dip more worrying than Liverpool 22/23?
