According to the geniuses on Twatter, blocking their expulsion from SWIFT is a good thing because doing so would block a diplomatic solution to this invasion.
Yeah.
No need to be so dismissive. It was an idea, that’s all. He was just Putin it out there.
Ukraine it in with those bad puns, guys.
Tbh the west could stop this easily if they wanted.
But then they would lose money…
Let’s see
I forgot last night when NordStream2 was brought up that Biden lifted sanctions on the pipeline last year to appease German leaders. It looks tough now that that all has been reversed in the last few days, but that’s what we have in terms of “leadership” right now. Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Tbf Iceland frozen treats are far more dangerous and lethal then anything at Faslane
Did they do the same with the Saudis regarding Yemen?
Good song though. Love a bit of Zac Brown Band.
CBC REPORT:
The economic measures — which the government says were carefully coordinated with other G7 countries — are meant to hobble Russia’s economy as its forces push further into Ukraine.
Trudeau called Russia’s act of war “a massive threat to security and peace around the world.”
Trudeau said Canada will target 62 individuals and entities, including members of the Russian elite and their family members, the Russian paramilitary organization Wagner Group and major Russian banks, among others.
Canada will also direct its financial firepower at members of the Russian Security Council, including the country’s defence, finance and justice ministers.
Effective immediately, Canada also will stop issuing export permits for Russian products and cancel existing permits.
Trudeau announced a series of sanctions earlier this week after it became clear Putin was preparing for some sort of attack on Ukraine — a country that has sought to more closely align itself with Western countries and the European Union in recent years.
‘Greatest threat to European stability’ since Second World War
Canadians are also barred from purchasing Russian sovereign debt and dealing with two state-backed Russian banks.
“These sanctions are wide-reaching. They will impose severe costs on complicit Russian elites, and they will limit President Putin’s ability to continue funding this unjustified invasion,” Trudeau said.
Good for Canada
Sanctions aren’t going to do anything right now. It’s not like they’re some new idea people dreamed up yesterday. Putin knew they’d come and knew who’d they’d target and he went for this path anyway. Maybe in the long term the damage might cause trouble but right now they don’t do anything to stop this happening.
In the short term sanctions won’t stop this and by the time they bite it will be too late for Ukraine. But Russia will be in no position to sustain this kind of aggression anywhere else.
Which is cold comfort if you’re a Ukrainian.
Not that I think the Ukrainians had much of a chance of resisting this, but I am surprised that Russia has been able to strike them in so many places and they look completely outmanoeuvred already. I know they have the conflict in the east of the country but I’m surprised they have left so much of their army committed there, likely to be cut off from Kyiv by the invaders.
This is at Chekhov metro station. Anti-war protesters are gathering.
St Petersburg tonight. People en masse protesting and say No to the War.
This is what we need.
People rising up against their leader’s selfish agendas.
No to war, No to losing lives
This is not the time for indecision. Western governments need to stop stalin and act now.
