The Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Actually, you’re right. Some days I have a fairly relaxed feeling that things will work out.

But once I’m sober I’m too scared to pick up and read “On tyranny” by Timothy Snyder again as I’m pretty sure we’re at the tipping point into full-out world-wide far-right authoritarianism now.

We shouldn’t take democracy for granted, there’s a route that ends with lefties like me and marginalised groups (whatever that will mean in 10 years) in Britain needing to seek asylum somewhere else in the world.

I don’t think some centrist leaders (including our PM) realise how fragile democracy is.

The Danish military intelligence service FE has published an assessment of Russia’s military capabilities and objectives after the war in Ukraine ends or hostilities are suspended.

According to FE, Russia may be willing to use military force if the military balance of power appears to be shifting in its favor. NATO would then be militarily weakened or politically divided.

When Russia is able to disengage its forces from Ukraine, it will be able to start a local war against its neighboring country 6 months later.

Within two years, Russia could pose a credible threat to one or more NATO countries and is ready for war against several countries in the Baltic Sea region.

In five years, Russia would be ready for a large-scale war in Europe, provided that the United States does not participate.

These calculations assume that NATO does not accelerate its armaments at the same pace as Russia.

My two Finnish pals when I speak to them atm…

Yeah, it is actually a really precarious situation.

stfu :sob:

Revving up the war machine may be the best way to keep their faltering economy going.

They’ve got several incentives to expand the war especially now that they’ve got a leg up with a friend in the White House.

Exactly this - WWIII is coming and it’s all again down to trying to appease an egomaniacal dictator :man_facepalming:t3:

The Russians probably promised Trump he could build a golf course in Kyiv or something.

Fuck me, consulting with Russia over Ukraine and try to get a deal where Russia supports America’s claim on Greenland.

This fat fuck is just out to antagonise everyone and make a name for himself

Where did you see that in the article?

I didn’t see it in the article but given the shouting recently would it really be that surprising?

BLOATUS not involving Ukraine in “peace talks” is just bizarre. Less “Art of the deal” and more “art of the steal”.

Didn’t he say “He would stop the war immediately” once he was president? I should be surprised he only stops lying to put cheeseburgers in his face or when he tells nurse that his nappy is full.

Well he just claimed that Ukraine started the war.

He also wants elections in Ukraine. He actually wants a pro Russian government there.

It’s an absolute shit show - he’s literally bending over backwards for Putin.

Europe needs to start throwing its weight around, we can’t allow another russian puppet state on our borders.

Why are elections a bad thing?

Because they’ll be manipulated by Russia and elections should be held on Ukraine’s terms and not Russia’s lol

MAYBE, if Ukraine got to join NATO and got territory back, then holding elections would be reasonable.
