The Labour Party

It’s quite foolish really. He isn’t going to be able to curb immigration in any meaningful way and he’s setting himself (or his party) up for a fall at the next election when reform will be able to point to that failure.

The problem is Britain and it’s electorate contradict themselves all the time.

They want to have their cake and eat it.

On this part. Labour has been using a soft approach to Trump going before the UK and US elections (My speculation is for a trade deal). This has nothing to do with Trump. This is how Starmer approaches domestic politics. By disingenuously taking whatever position the wind blows and using his lack of charisma try pull off a populist position.

Just before this, with the UK-US trade ‘deal’. He was in front of a group of unimpressed factory workers contradicting himself that ‘Britain was open for business’ but when the tariffs was launched it was ‘era of globalisation is over’.

If a focus group told him being a communist would poll him to win elections. He’d go out there and blast The Internationale. He doesn’t believe in anything but power.

Before the inevitable backlash to me posting in response, I will set out my stall on immigration which is that I continue to be frustrated that the issue has continued to gain traction and is being called out as the underlying cause of all the UKs problems. It was also instrumental in the UKs flawed decision to leave the EU.

The new policy is clearly reactionary to recent events in the UK, but I’d also argue across Europe as well. Immigration is becoming an increasingly important issue for voters, rightly or wrongly. While I disagree with the basis of the argument, the issue is not going away unless it is dealt with which can only be achieved if you reduce immigration by a noticeable level, improve peoples living standards and the wider economy, and fix the NHS, so people can’t point to not being able to get a job or being able to see a GP or a dentist.

I think Starmer has to react to this issue and he realises that it has to be dealt with, otherwise there is a real risk of Reform replacing them at the next General Election.

I think the longer the immigration issues is left unchecked the more likely we’ll see a civil war erupt is Western Europe.

Multiculturalism will be considered a failure and unfortunately so many lives will be damaged as a result.

Regardless of my personal view on the matter, I think the UK’s open border policy from the 90s has hurt them in the long run.

Starmer’s new regime isn’t even going to tackle the problems at source. The small boats are still arriving.

Will tarrifs on the countries that refuse to take back their unskilled/illegal migrants be considered an unethical proposal here? Maybe a bit of ‘Trump Lite’ is required to sort the problem.

GBNews (I know) interviewed a few migrants at Calais and they all pretty much said they’re coming to the UK because they believe we’ll give them everything.

They think it’s a paradise here and that’s likely the narrative the smugglers are parroting when they pick them up.

Able to give me a timeframe? I intend to selfishly relax in the countryside of Jamaica while all that goes down.

5-10yrs ish. I think 2029’s election result will tell us how close/far we are imo.

Sufficient time for me to ship some barrels down.

The average person is not fully aware of the political and economic forces impacting their lives. All they know is everything costs more now.

These scumbag hate mongers offer a convenient scapegoat of people who are equally victimized by the same political and economic forces.

They don’t want to say it’s the private equity firms, and the royal inbreds, and the investment banks…no it’s a Bangladeshi street vendor who wouldn’t be there if his country weren’t ravaged by globalization (global capital).

It’s just divide and conquer by the ultra rich ruling class.

We are essentially in agreement that the ‘narrative’ is that all the problems are because of immigration!

However, I don’t want to dismiss people’s growing concerns and certainly think that this issue needs to be dealt with. The consequences of not dealing with it are far worse than the impact of addressing the issue.

Well yeah, they’re not gonna run the footage of countless people whose stated reason for coming was that they’re fleeing war/ethnic cleansing/famine etc lol

Somehow “the last living member of my family is there” quotes never seem to get much coverage.

Exactly this.

Its intergenerational warfare. Boomers are profiting off the backs of younger people.

We’re literally letting Reform’s aged 65+ support base dictate national policy at all levels.

The turnout for ages 18-24 was at 37% at the least GE. You have to turnout if you want to effect changes beyond a few university towns.

That would involve mainstream parties trying to persuade younger people they had something worth voting for and they’ve always been unwilling to do that.

Maybe threatening young people with crippling fines and prison sentences will increase their enthusiasm and participation in democracy.

I think it’s FPTP that lends itself to voter suppression.

People don’t feel represented and so don’t bother if they live somewhere their vote doesn’t count.

Well, the Lib Dems and other smaller parties completely blew the chance to change it with the AV referendum.

But even so, I just barely went out to vote at the last GE. I haven’t really seen anything that made me think it was worth doing and if the system was AV, proportional representation or pin the tail on the donkey, it still wouldn’t get me to the polling station because there is no system that can change what this country is or the kind of people it will always elect or come back to electing.
