I feel the consensus is that Canibus won. Also Iād consider this track to be pretty well-known and regarded in terms of diss tracks lol
Nas is my favourite rapper of all time but Takeover is underrated and Ether is overrated. Jay actually makes some good disses in Takeover like about banging Nas ex wife and that Nas made a hot like but Jay made it into a hot song.
Ether sounds hardcore but itās mostly just Nas saying mean stuff to Jay-Z like that heās ugly etc.
Nas has another song on his album Godās Son that addresses the beef and takes a few shots at Jay and I actually prefer it to Ether personally, even if itās not explicitly a dis track.
My understanding was that at the time Canibus was seen to have lost the battle, I know that in retrospect there are more people like us who reflect on the tracks and give Canibus his dues. But I was talking about the immediate reaction and how things played out at the time. But I think this is based on the Beef documentary and some other things Iāve seen or read. I canāt speak on that from personal memory as I wasnāt in any respect aeare of the beef at the time it actually happened.
I didnāt comment on whether Canibusā diss track was well known, I said that I feel it is underrated. The two are not mutually exclusive. It can also be well regarded by some, even many, but by and large not hugely appreciated or known by the mainstream. When Iāve had discussions about diss tracks (granted, thatās not happened much since school or college days) itās not one that was ever brought up alongside those by Pac, Nas, Jay etc.
But maybe you are right and everything I said is rubbish lol, Iām no expert and this is based on my perceptions and fading memories of things Iāve seen, heard or discussed a long time ago.
That wasnāt overly clear from your post but yes Iād agree more in respect to the rough time this was taking place.
Like you, I wasnāt really aware at the time and was probably too young/didnāt really have access to this music at the actual time but have obviously since delved into it all. It does seem as though LL was viewed as the winner due to clout but that people now sort of accept that perhaps Canibus produced the better material, which I agree with.
I didnāt say that you said it wasnāt well-known or that it canāt be underrated, I was just pointing out that the song is quite well-known in terms of diss tracks. I feel the Canibus v LL stuff was relatively high-profile although obviously not in the Tupac v Biggie/everyone else or Nas v Jay Z bracket but still a pretty classic beef. Whether itās under or over rated is really a matter of opinion so I wonāt argue on that point.
Anyway, more generally on the LL v Canibus stuff, if you get a chance, you should listen to 4, 3, 2, 1 by LL, it actually features Canibus but apparently LL wrote his verse after hearing Canibusā verse on the song. From memory, I feel like this was a bit of a precursor to their beef.
Personally Iām a big fan of Canibus, although sometimes his material favours complexity over musical appeal. Another interesting thing is one of his albums he recorded without instrumentals and then sent them to his producer who added them in afterwards. I think the album is called Rip the Jacker. Apparently he only heard the final tracks after buying a copy of the album lol
