Ferguson did have the advantage that Bayern have in Bundesliga but then again an argument can be made that he created that advantage for himself.
Wenger could have given him a run if he continued his momentum but Emirates stadium will never come in consideration years from now while deciding this title.
Wenger’s constraints are a reality of now and will be forgotten, just like all the constraints that are forgotten for other managers in the list.
It’s a shame that the era was short but as a Wenger fan, I will have to live with it.
Ferguson really shined in terms of management post Ronaldo. His signings turned out to be shit.
Anderson, Hargreaves, Ashley Young, Valencia, Da Silva brothers etc. He was signing the likes of Bebe & Obertan. He was relying on Gibson, Cleverley for midfield duties. But he still managed to get the last few ounces from the likes of Rio, Evra, Rooney and likes.
Ferguson has to be the only winner, atleast from the bunch who have managed since 90s.
People can talk about the Ferguson spending in the 90s all they want this guy still managed to see off the mega spending Chelsea under Mourimho, he saw off the mega spending City under Mancini and he saw off Liverpool under Benitez.
He out lasted everyone that came and went. How can use his spending in the 90s to discredit him all you want but that doesn’t explain how he managed to get to CL finals with the likes of Giggs in midfield and how he had players like Fletcher, Park and O’Shea punching way above their weight.
He made two CL finals at the tail end of his career which to me indicates that we’re talking about a coach who found a way to stay relevant for 27 years at United.
Every big name manager who was his peer in the 80s/90s was finished by the time Fergie had won his last league title. Fergie had adaptability and insane ability to remain relevant and that is what sets him apart from the rest. His United team had no identifiable style of play because they constantly changed the formula to remain relevant. Fergie spent his money in the 90s but that’s not why he was winning a league in 2013 with Giggs in midfield and an ageing defensive core.
Fergie knew how to refresh his coaching team and delegate responsibility. Carlos Queiroz, Steve McClaren, and Mike Phelan were all more involved than Fergie on the training ground and had a big say on team tactics.
Wenger on the other hand wanted to do everything. It was when the club started to delegate certain responsibilities away from him, that’s when he left. If Wenger followed the Fergie blueprint, he would have been far more successful post-Invincibles.
Yep. Kept Boro and Pat as his assistants until Pat retired. Kept Peyton as GK coach when every goalkeeper rinsed him and exposed him.
Just never really refreshed the team behind the scenes and got another eye to look over us. We had teams capable of winning trophies in the post invincibles era just were poorly coached teams.
The 2007/08 season still stings tbh. How we let the lead slip towards the end. If we’d won that season, I’m pretty certain our club’s direction would’ve taken a different turn.
