It’s not expected for him to win after his first or second attempt, Arsenal as a club don’t really often come this far in this competition. But if/when we do we would like for them to go all the way because it rarely happens Arsenal reaches these stages.
Nah, if we won the Carabao, the same fans moaning and demanding more now would still be moaning and demanding more. I dont even think the FA Cup would appease, the PL/CL and that is all…
I just don’t see how this is true at all. If we’d won a league cup this season but had the exact same league campaign and CL exit, not a single thing would change about the general conversation we’re having. Arteta has won an FA Cup and at this point you’d think it never happened, it virtually doesn’t count for anything in people’s minds because we haven’t won a league or CL.
He’s going to be judged now on whether he can win one of those and picking up an extra league or FA Cup along the way isn’t going to change that.
I think that’s true for the most part but I think there are also some fans, myself included, that would have extended Arteta some grace considering the many difficult circumstances.
Obviously I’d rather we win the domestic cups than not, but it just shouldn’t be a barometer of how we measure the manager at this stage. Criticism of our league form this season is perfectly warranted, I don’t think the fact that we haven’t picked up a domestic cup to paper over those cracks is an issue worth focusing on.
If we did win a league cup for instance, a year from now if we don’t win the league or CL there won’t be a single person saying “yeah but we got another league cup last season.” It’s a nice moment in time to win it, but it says very little about the club and doesn’t have any meaningful lasting effect. Wenger won 3 FA Cups in his final 5 seasons, but we were in the wilderness league wise and it was obvious a change had to be made regardless of the cup success.
I think a league cup or FA cup would have at least relieved some pressure that will be piled onto the manager and offer some rationale for why he’s still the right man.
For me Arteta is an excellent manager and I prefer him to stay. I think with the right backing he can achieve things here. That’s why silly comments he may have made in the post match don’t phase me.
My frustration lays with people higher up and Edu, even though he’s no longer at the club.
My fear is that instead of properly backing him the board will likely keep him on as a lightning rod for criticism like they did Wenger.
I would of been happy if we won something. Which can be evidenced by my season expectation of title challenge + cup. No hypocrisy here.
I know the league is hard and there’s an element on luck involved which is why I never set winning the league as an expectation, just a title challenge.* But we do have to bring up we (intentionally or not) setup our season half way to end up in a ‘win the league or bust’. Just like this season we ended up in a ‘Win the CL or bust’. Now the expectation of winning the CL is ludicrous, but these are the circumstances that develop.
Now, there’s folk that only count the League/CL as the premier of trophies that mean anything. Fair play. My response is, you do have to say, it’s really not that great we have a good team for several years with nothing in the cabinet?
*Worth mentioning we didn’t have a title challenge, if it was one it was a laughable attempt. So I think I’m pretty consistent in saying this season sucked arse, obviously you can argue otherwise if we won a trophy and had a bad title challenge I would still be unhappy. Meh expectations are expectations or why bother setting any?
If we were to win a couple FA/League Cups the past 3 seasons, would you not then say “it’s really not that great we have a good team for several years without a PL or CL in the cabinet?”
Just have a look at Man Utd, they’ve won cups in back-to-back seasons and could be doing it again this season.
They’re still a laughing stock.
Just like we ultimately were a decade ago when we were able to snatch an FA Cup for a couple years but then got bitch slapped in the CL by the big boys and never truly challenged in the PL.
He is obviously here for another season so regardless of whether he gets the killer centre forward, left winger and creative midfielder in he has to get better at managing multiple competitions and utilise Plan B’s off the bench.
Not once have we been able to sustain competing on two fronts and his squad utilisation has been fucking dog shit. His favouritism has to stop for out of form players and has to be way braver in making changes.
Like Darkseid I’m not confident this side of his managerial journey will ever improve. He seems to be a Plan A manager through and through using the smallest group of players possible.
The injuries this season could very well be closely linked to this strategy. People talk about improving our bench but is he going to even use the guys that drop down to it following signings? i.e Martinelli, Havertz, Merino, White.
Really nothing to suggest he will trust them any more than he has Zinchenko to cover for example.
I would be happy with any season that ends at Wembley in May with that famous trophy being held aloft by our captain. We really should look to bring that home as often as possible. It’s a grand institution and fuck anyone who diminishes it.
