I absolutely love Bobby. He was one of those players that made everything look effortless. And if you try and think about one outstanding quality of his, you can’t cause he didn’t just have one thing about him. He was quick enough to keep defenders on their toes, had fantastic footwork, could beat his man (proof above), was physically strong and hard to shake off the ball, and could shoot/cross with both feet. Just an artist.
And one handsome guy.
That era of players was just incredible, not just becaise of the winning trophies but I love that group of players, so much talent.
Out of those Invincibles Bobby is my favourite.
A player you absolutely love to watch play football

And what a signing he turned out to be

What is also forgotten about Pires is that he was a 6ft 1 bloke. As much as his reputation was to be a “diver” (bollocks that was exaggerated by the Manc / Fergie loving press because there were so many diving cunts around then still), he had a big frame and could handle himself. Helps that he had the likes of Adams, Keown, Vieira, Lauren etc who would bully cunts back but Pires wasn’t a pussy either. There was still a lot of blood and thunder in the PL in the early 00’s.
His speed and silkiness was phenomenal for a guy his height. The intricate play on the left touch line was incredible. Remember watching those games at Highbury on the TV with the really low down camera view, wondering how the fuck Pires would get himself away from defenders with slick dribbling or one touch passing. There was no room! Mesmerising. What a fucking player. A true legend.
Fucking sexy as well.
ffs Thierry…
Arsenal drew this game 2-2 so we paid the price for this missed opportunity
Fckin Heskey.
Wasn’t even a corner in the end for those evil bastards that they equalised from.
The first season I’ve watched him. Was still ridiuculous, just after the injury.
Only clocked recently he had 26 league appearances that season and still got his 14 league goals. That’s a brilliant return even for top stiker in those years. And that’s just on top of all the creative influence he had.
Out of this world.
Love Pires, but could his return that season be argued it upset the rhythm of the team? Obviously he needed a bit of time to get up to speed after such an injury. We were flying early on with likes of Wiltord putting in possibly his best performances for the club.
That’s an absolutely outrageous statement
I’m personally offended and I demand some actions.
:hipster:
On a serious note. I think we were still doing brilliant when he just got back into the team… IIRC he started scoring right away.
The fall started almost at the very end of the season, I don’t really know how do you connect his return with it
I think ljungberg was in and out through injuries that year as well? At the time long term you knew both would be back in as starters which was understandable but a shame for the likes of Kanu and Wiltord who started that season superbly. Obviously it did pay off as the following season we went invincible with both back in as important players.
It’s been 20 years now so the details aren’t as clear but just thinking out loud. Bobby will always be my favourite.
We had a 4 game losing streak in all competitions in the autumn of 2002, too.
Trying to work out if we won a single game in the northwest that season. I think only a smashing of Man City at Maine Road. Rather ironic given current circumstances
(Lost at Everton, Blackburn and United. Drew at Liverpool and Bolton)
The second to last goal in this video - that goal looks so much more difficult than a half line goal scored by Beckham.
I am surprised it’s not heralded as one of the best goals.
Yeah, I love the technique of that goal. Simply perfect.
I guess it’s somewhat down to being the last goal (I think) in a six goal win but the sheere quality of the finish is amazing.
Was anyone lucky enough to get a picture with him?
