Riccardo Calafiori (33)

That’s harsh dude. That’s Roma’s best defender and probably best performer the past two years.
I guess I shouldn’t ask what you think of Roma’s current team in that case… :wright2:

Left back maybe isn’t a priority, but why not improve the position if we can? Shifting Tierney, Zinny and Tavares and spending the money with maybe some spare on Califiori is an upgrade.

He won’t be 53m if a finished product.

If we believe he has the potential then better spend now.
43m is nothing

I wish i had nothing it would be awesome :trossard:

Our left side was broken all year and the LB position was a big reason why.

I’m excited for Timber’s reintegration but you can’t put a massive load on a young player coming off an ACL reconstruction.

And we need to be able to rest Big Gabi without feeling like we’re taking a huge risk.

LB/LCB may not be as big of a priority as midfield or attack but it’s definitely a need and I see no reason to believe that we can’t address all three this summer.

@ronniec is right. £43m is nothing in the current market for a young player with huge potential. Fully behind this signing. Reckon he plays/alternates mostly at LB, but provides backup option for Gabriel at LCB. Probably being eyed as Gabriel’s successor.

Defence has been the foundation of Arteta’s revolution at Arsenal, so buying a quality defender pleases me. We need quality additions this summer, not quantity. Calafiori seems to perfectly fit the clubs target player profile, so this transfer ticks a lot of boxes.

Hopefully, Edu can get this done promptly so we can move onto the next target.

I do wonder how many people have actually seen Calafiori play outside of his 3 games at the Euros?

Good player, but I think his development is better served at CB given his injury history. I think there is a big risk taking someone with his injury record and playing them as a LB in the Premier League.

I think he has a very high ceiling and I do love the idea of signing him. But I think he develops better as a CB than a LB

0 but where is the fun in being sensible. Everyone loves a player who you never heard of until they have a great euros or world cup. :joy:

I’ve seen him discussed more in the second half of the season.
He did have some big performances in the run-in, especially in big games.

I remember when you brought him up back in April I think, there were already links with Juve and Madrid, Roma fans wanted to bring him “home”.

Just a perfect storm for him the last couple of months.
I thought Scamacca was gonna be the same, strong end of the season, Atalanta reaching two finals, winning one, getting Top 4.
Bit let down with how he faired in the Euros. Frankly, he was one of Italy’s worst players.
Bastoni and Calafiori are the only ones that really shone.

Sorry to jinx this but I’ve just signed him in Football Manager.

I’m gonna say it I don’t want him. Injury history and the fact he’s got the euros pump just puts me off, I’m never a fan of players who shine all of a sudden in the international tournaments.

I didn’t even want andrei arse shavings. His 4 goal haul against the scousers and the winner against Barca did sway me a fair bit but still the point stands.

Players like Shaqiri, embolo, carrasco all look to have some promise when they turn up for their countries in the tournaments but then aren’t consistent at club level. Arshavin and James Rodriguez weren’t either.

Let him chill at Bologna another year then take him for 60m if he’s that good.

Didn’t we sign Gilberto after a good tournament campaign with Brazil or am I misremembering.
I know for sure we signed Campbell after his performances for Costa Rica at the Copa America.

Edit: Yep, we signed Gilberto after he won the World Cup with Brazil.

Joel Campbell another prime example, cheers

It isn’t an all of a sudden thing with him. He’s been fantastic for Bologna and instrumental in their success this season.

Him shining at the Euros was just him being introduced to a wider audience but he’s been absolutely immense for Bologna and at 22 is one of the very best young defenders in the world.

His career has been disrupted by early injuries but if he continues on his current trajectory then he will be a special defender.

Fabrizio posted this few hours ago. If we can get this done, would be a great piece of opening business. Guimarez, and nico Williams would do just fine for the summer business as long as partey also stays.
