Edit: This is where my limited knowledge of the UK press laws come into play.

Obviously at this point everyone and their brother is aware of who this player is but nobody can print it.

The club can hide behind the point that ā€œno charges were filedā€ but that standard is so foreign to me coming from North American sports. I recognize that there are player unions and CBAs that govern how discipline is handled. You only need to look at the Andy Polo case from MLS to see that clubs can get extremely involved in criminal cases.

And I also don’t know if a player being suspended because the club know about allegations – but no charges were filed – would expose the club to legal jeopardy. I’m skeptical on that front but, again, I don’t know what levers are available for the club to pull in this situation.

I imagine the club could suspend him from first team and make him train with youth etc.

I assume the club believe the players denials or are prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Regarding press laws, the athletic did a decent job of explaining but i think its now behind a pay wall.

I don’t think this is a good idea, but the club is probably being advised on what they can and can’t do. Just prepare for a lot of criticism if charges are ever filled.

So just purely in terms of what is likely to happen in terms of the football at this point…

Partey will play at least until the next hearing which was described as happening in early October. That is probably 9-10 league fixtures.

If he is charged at that hearing, he gets suspended, we rely on Elneny for 6-7 fixtures until the World Cup, and then assumedly line up a deal early in the January window for a replacement.

If the hearing just continues the process until a later date, it will likely be in December or January so we find out at that point and, if he is charged, again look in the January window for a replacement.

If the hearing leads to the case being dropped, then we just stick with Partey/Elneny all year and assumedly buy another 6 when Elneny’s contract runs out next summer.

It’s been crazy online. All the opposing fans are literally frothing at the mouth at the chance of taking shots at us.

It’ll get real ugly if he isn’t found innocent.

Imagine though hypothetically if ā€œyouā€ were the player/worker and were innocent but faced an accusation you denied, how would you feel and what would your loyalty be to an employer that didnt back you and ostracised you in the wake of an allegation…

Football tribalism at its finest. I remember Man Utd fans defending Greenwood, and I’m willing to bet that those same fans would be at the front of the queue to have a pop at Partey.

Yeah I think it’s the right thing to do and I admire the club for doing it but it’s extremely high risk.

Bloody hell, this is messy

Irresponsible of the police to say no further action was taken because legislation had not come into effect as that suggests it’s the only reason, when it also seems quite possible an absence of evidence is also a factor.

I think this person has proved to be reliable witness tbh. I honestly think TP is in serious trouble here

In trouble in what way? If no further action is taken he’s clear unless new evidence comes up.

Let’s go big man get back in midfield

I just think it’s all too grey to be convinced of anything on in this.
Dysfunctional relationship makes things very hard too interpret on.
It’s just horrible and ugly from every angle. I’ve give up trying to decipher it.
It’s a nightmare too if it makes a jury for debating.

I think there is an irresponsibility by the Barnet police here as well.

While the fact that it was Partey was a poorly kept secret before that football fans were piecing together, the police have more or less joined the dots for everyone now.

(She mentions Partey in a tweet, they mention her, albeit not by name, etc)

I don’t really understand the UK legal system and process but the police don’t seem to be covering themselves in glory in this case so far.

According to her at least, she first made the complaints last fall but the police didn’t arrest Partey on these charges until July, after he had been arrested on the other charge with the other alleged victim. So they had been looking at the case for like 8-9 months by that point and they never wondered whether or not a crime committed outside the UK that occurred before this new law could actually be prosecuted?

Having read through the June 2021 complainant’s Twitter a bit, I would also be extremely surprised if her other alleged complaint ends up leading to a charge and prosecution. By her own telling, it was a case of them having consensual sex and then her telling Partey to stop in the middle and him not stopping when she asked. She says she did not consider it a sexual assault at the time, just thought he didn’t listen or hear her, but the police months later told her it was rape. I don’t want to excuse that behavior at all by Partey if the story is true, consent can definitely be withdrawn in the middle of sex and if somebody withdraws consent then you need to stop. But that is an impossible case to prosecute - its not only ā€œhe said, she saidā€ but he can say that he didn’t hear her, or that they she said conflicting things about consent in the middle of the act, or that they had a miscommunication, etc. To me its irresponsible to continue pretending like that is a case you might plausibly charge and bring to trial.

They’ve literally said it was a legislative issue that meant TP wasn’t charged. Like bruh…

All we need to be convinced about is that no action is currently being taken. If that changes we can change our views and maybe the club will change theirs.

As of now he’s our CM and no wrongdoing has been proven even to the point of a charge.

I agree with the second part. I think the case for the first rape in April 2021 is weak.
