Messi isn’t even the GOAT for his national team. :joy:

Means fuck all though given that Messi is Argentinian and Ronaldo is Portuguese.

You’re right. Argentina had a strong national team before Messi, Ronaldo took the country on his shoulders, lead it to success and has inspired the next generation for Portugal.

Lead it to success, did he play in the final?

He had what, one good game in the tournament?

Argentina is God awful team with some talented but mental midgets, if Higuain had buried his chance against Germany there’d be no debate.

The year 2016 will stay in my memory as that of the underdogs. Leicester winning the league, and then Portugal winning the Euro. Credit to CR7 and co, but as with most things, luck played a huge role in their journey, as they scrapped past the group stages(3 draws out of 3). And they weren’t convincing in the KO games either, bar the SF may be. But you need luck in those tournaments and they had them.
However, without even entering the Messi vs CR7 debate, I’d like to point that using Portugal’s 2016 Euro win as a point in favour of the debate sounds a bit daft imo. Zagorakis led Greece to Euro 2004. Does that make him the GOAT then?
If I were to talk about the debate, I’d say that Messi is probably the better football player while Ronaldo is the better athlete. Two totally different type of players who can’t be compared like for like imo. But if need be, Messi > CR7 any day of the week.

I fully sympathise about that Portugal EURO win. One of the ugliest shittest wins I’ve ever seen in life. Ronaldo getting all the credit in that final fucking pissed me off tbh

Eder pulled that goal out of thin air but Ronaldo won Portugal the world cup apparently.

You’re just shifting the argument and getting likes from other Ronaldo fans lol.

You said Messi isn’t even GOAT for Argentina as if that says anything about his ability compared to Ronaldo, a player who isn’t Argentinian. Its totally spurious reasoning. Henry isn’t the greatest French player of all time but that means fuck all if we were comparing him to a striker who isn’t French, it does nothing to further the debate.

Logic seems to be in short supply on this one though, cos apparently you can not play particularly well in a tournament, not play in the final but instead stand on the sidelines cheerleading for your teammates and still get all the credit if your name is Ronaldo.

You can also play in a final against Greece and lose it and get no stick about it

Haha true.

One of my Liverpool supporting mates uses this logic to convince himself that Ronaldo > Messi

Seriously how many fckn emojis bruh !?

Just wanna confirm that 3 goals 3 assists for a team punching way above their weight is not playing particularly well.

I have to concede that the hattrick vs Spain was impressive.

It tells when most people only recall Ronaldo in the CL and not watching him and Messi week in week out…

Tbf this is some top notch bait.

I agree with the first two but although Platini was a great player he didn’t quite get to the level of the others, I preferred Zidane.

What Maradonna did at Napoli was amazing and he also did it at national level as well, when he won the World Cup with Argentina.

But both Messi and Ronaldo are way ahead of any players I’ve seen since.
Ronaldo is stronger and better in the air but Messi has amazing skill and is the more dangerous player.

Every time I’ve seen Barcelona in La Liga games, with such a great team full of world class players, it’s nearly always Messi that stands out.

It’s hard to see who the next great player will be, possibly Neymar or Mbappe, but they would have to go a long way to catch Messi and Ronaldo.

That was the world cup a couple years later, but yes it really was incredible

The 80s equivilent of Messi-CR7 debate was Maradona-Platini, with plenty rating Platini as number 1. He beat Maradona to European player of the year in 83, 84 and 85. Was more prolific from midfield than Diego in Serie A, while being one of the all time great playmakers and a freekick was like a penalty to him. He also won 2 European trophies with Juve, 2 Serie A, he was key to France winning the European Championships and took France to 2 world cup Semis.

I remember his free kicks and you’re right, they were as good as a penalty.

I think Maradonna just edges it for me because of the way he changed Napoli from mid table to title winners and then after he left they went back to mid table

Also the way he played at the highest level and dragged the Argentina side to win the World Cup.
