Phones Thread

My main problem with the iPhone is that I still think they are overpriced. Two reasons I got the Pixel 3a, great price without a lesser camera and the unlimited photo storage. Android has grown on me, but I do miss the simplicity of iOS.

I refuse to take out a phone contract anymore. And the 12 mini starts at £699. I paid £300 for my Pixel 3a new in sale (£399 was the retail price).

Yeah the 12 line has the same design as the 4/4s. Crazy to think that back then the 4 with a 3.5” screen was considered a larger phone and phones like the original galaxy where considered to have massive screens at 4 inches.

The mini has basically the same size screen as the 8 plus which was the largest apple phone until the XS Max (2018):joy: which is actually a very large screen in a small phone. I’m lucky I got large hands and long fingers so I always get the larger phones as it’s too difficult for me to readjust to the smaller size now. But smaller more pocket friendly phones are very appealing.

That is one Android feature I love. When I use my work phone, and older iPhone, it would drive me nuts.

The other think I’d love to see all phone implement is the adaptive screen for reading. The OnePlus has this and so when reading the screen looks closer to the kindle screen. Loved it.

Yeah the keyboard thing was really annoying, iOS didn’t implement it natively until iOS 13. You could get it via 3rd party keyboards for a while though (Swiftkey, Swipe) from like 2014 I think, which was like 2 years after Android adopted it natively. I will say though that once iOS adds a feature it refines it in a way that it feels and performs better than its competitors.

I’ve been using Swipe since 2011, and was super gassed when Google added it to their keyboard back in 2012/13, however the Google keyboard seems to have gotten worse since then and it’s become cluttered with all kinds of things you can’t remove and the predictions have some how got worse.

I will say I also preferred my keyboard on the OnePlus. It wasn’t just three size, but better overall feel. Still haven’t fully adjusted to the pixel one and it’s been about 2 years.

For Android, it can very from device depending on the skin. I can honestly say I prefer the one OnePlus users to stock. It’s very close to stock but better. Can’t stand the others though. Hate Samsung.

Android, like Windows, as well refined as Apple. That’s simply down to MacOS and iOS don’t have to run on third party hardware. I still miss my pre-intel iBook. But again, computer wise, I grew up on Mac.

For me whether going iPhone or Android is a matter of functionality. Since I work on MacBook Pro for the last 15 years, it was a natural step to stick to the Apple ecosystem.

But I do appreciate a few top of the line Android phones. Especially the Pixel 4.

I’m just trying out the swipe feature on SwiftKey and it feels strange to use one thumb to swipe, just feels slower than typing with both thumbs (unless I’m doing it wrong lol).

I’ve not used a native typing app for years. Been a swiftkeyer for like 8 years at least. First thing I install whenever I get a new phone. They have a great selection of themes too

:100: their skins are so heavy. And they always have all these extra duplicate apps for apps which are already on android, and they make it so you can’t remove them. Then there’s bixby, S voice, the Samsung store etc… one Ui has brought it inline a bit but touch wiz used to be a nightmare.

I liked sense ui on the original HTC M7, had a material design and wasn’t to heavy. But i loved what Motorola would do, which was basically stock Android but they added a few of their own apps which would enable phone specific features, but you could always remove it if you wanted.

Never used Oneplus phone although every year their phones get rave reviews. What’s the UI like? Stock?

Yeah I also moved to MacOS but always keep either a Windows laptop or use boot camp for games.

Swiping is a lot faster once you get used to it. It feels more natural an intuitive for some reason.

I’m going to cross the divide and switch to iPhone next year I think. I fancy a complete change from Android which I have had in every phone for a decade. Currently on the s9 and had it since April 2018.

iPhone 11 but looking to grab an iPhone 12 next week. I’m an Apple fiend I can’t deny it.

Tinder’s got this thing where you can just hit the heart icon now. No need to swipe

Oh, erm, you weren’t talking about Tinder…

It’s OxygenOS and very close to stock. Very lightweight with tweaks that improve stock Andoird imo. It’s why I tried it out. But their phones are just too big for my hands. I actually prefer to stock - some added apps but I was able to delete what I didn’t use and nothing close to the Samsung skin.

I’m still on my I phone 8 that I’ve had for nearly 3 years now, longest an I phone has ever lasted me by the way.

I was like that with my 6s. I eventually decided to try android again (OnePlus and now Pixel). I just wasn’t impressed with the iPhone 7 or 8. Like I said above, got tired of the price increase with no real worthy improvements to warrant the price hike imo.

I was bored this morning and went back to February 2011 to see how long I’ve had my phones over the last decade.

San Francisco was Feb 11 - Jul 13
Galaxy S3 was Jul 13 - Jan 16
Galaxy S6 was Jan 16 - Apr 18
Galaxy S9 was Apr 18 - Present

S9 longest I’ve had a phone so far. At 2 years 8 months. Won’t be going any higher though as I want to upgrade in January 21.

I want a total change from Android as I’m bored of it now. Gonna get an iPhone 11.
