Start Lewis Skelly is it’s a choice of him or Partey or Zinny in the full back positions.
I’d actually start Zinny in midfield if fit.
Merino has been bad so far, but he needs time.
Don’t really think he’s been as bad as has been made out. Once he’s fully embedded into this system and shaken off the injury cobwebs I back his class to come to the fore. Feel like if people were more aware of how good he was at Sociedad they wouldn’t be this concerned. Ceiling is high with Merino.
The box to box role would be his best role though, not so much as a main playmaker. Barring some fine margins we could be talking about some match altering contributions from him (namely the Martinelli miss).
Rice, Merino, Odegaard is a midfield I’m looking forward to seeing.

Tbh, goal aside I found him average.
Almost cost us a goal in the first half but Salah’s shot went wide.
I can definitely notice some Xhaka-isms from him. He does like going down to win fouls quite often and the ref today wasn’t having it.

had his best game for us today. If it wasn’t for the goal though, i’d be a bit disappointed.

Was really worried after that ball rolled under his studs and then he hurt his shoulder (do we know if it was the same shoulder?) but he seemed to flip a switch and was solid the rest of the match. Not too shabby.

Doesn’t have the it factor we needed from the midfield signing to take us up a level, although still early days. But once Ode is back the three in midfield should undoubtedly be Partey, Rice and Ode.

Nope.
I said it when we signed him he will not bench partey despite everyone assuming he would. I am reiterating that he should be the bench player because rice plays better with the others.
If merino establishes himself and can take on more creativity then he will have a shout at starting.
