What makes you so sure? He hasn’t got an sample size outside of Italy, it’s just as much a risk as say…City hiring Txiki Begiristain.
Cultural differences mostly when it comes to the role of the executive. His role and remit is more clearly defined in Italian football and Latin countries especially when working as CEO of the sporting corporate entity
The reason he hasn’t got a sample outside of Italy is because he doesn’t want one, they’ll always be opportunities for successful proven executives all over the world but his knows his strengths in with the Italian market where his influence and knowledge is greatest.
The amount of guys who can translate their methods to different countries and produce success at a high level is rare, sure Txiki is one of them. The culture of whatever nation your club is in and the practices of the club itself plays a big part in how successful you are. In England the corporate structure is different, internal politics and culture of executives playing a big part in on field planning.
Some guys just don’t travel outside their home areas or certain club structures. Mislintat and Monchi comes to mind

Beautiful
Football artistry the likes of which we will rarely see in the future.
Brilliant player.
The best midfielder we’ve had in the Emirates era.
His kind really is a dying breed, he has it all in his feet…unfortunately for him the modern game is ruthless, if you are not training hard to be ready for the physicality and the pace you get what you get.
Also, first half of the video is Mesut creating chances and his teammates not converting, must have been frustrating
Some might say Cesc was better but I think Ozil tops him. On an individual level I agree he was probably the most talented midfielder in the Emirates era but Santi was more integral to the team and only trails him slightly on individual brilliance.
I give it to Santi overall.
Santi was an incredible midfielder, too. What Santi was doing within a shit team can’t be overlooked. For his age, as well (he was immense in his late 20s) he felt like a freak of nature.
In fact, I probably wouldn’t argue if someone said Santi was the best midfielder we had in the Emirates era.
I don’t get this modern game line that gets thrown about. Have I missed something in the last 3-4 years that makes Ozil unusable? He was a resounding success at Arsenal only 4-5 years ago so where does this line about modern game come from?
I feel like it’s the laziest cliche imaginable. Managers like Conte, Klopp and Pep who coach high energy teams were deploying the same tactics a decade + ago so where does this modern game line come from?
It feels like these days fewer teams operate with a central no 10 like Ozil who doesn’t really press intensely or defend. More is expected of players like that, I don’t think they get a relative free pass mich these days, like Wenger used to give Ozil.
If you compare football today to football in the 90’s there are a lot of differences, the pace of the game was much slower and you were not punished if you were not in such great physical shape, i was reffering to this and his rapid decline, not that he was not good for us at all.
All in all he had a great career, my opinion is he would be even more appreciated had he played 30 years ago, when playmakers and classic #10’s thrived.
Think what he meant was there are no artistic players like Ozil, who in my opinion was a bit of a throwback. These days it’s all about pace, power and precision.
this. pressing is not just pointless if you’re doing it incorrectly, it’s bad, your attackers make max sprints for nothing. It’s both a numbers game and a sync thing. 3 players pressing 5 competent players is bad, it’s better to do mothing. if you’re 3 v 3 but you’re not doing it at the same time it’s bad and better to do nothing.
It seems to me that this is difficult with roaming players, AM or CM. Pogba struggles partly for this reason. If he has a free role even back at CM, where will he be when they lose the ball? can he press his guy or is he 20y off to the side somewhere?
Müller nowadays only roams about when he arrives late in the box or similar. Otherwise he is in his zone or on his guy pressing.
Kroos is another example, an absolute traffic cone without the ball, a bit like Xhaka when at his worst. Real have to compensate for it with Modric being uh… the best CM in the world or something who actually presses well and interrupts play well, and Casemiro cleaning up behind, or Valverde covering a ton of space with runs which barely works.
detail management system football is in right now, it doesn’t suit these players and managers probably can’t find a way to use them easily it seems imo.
“One of the reasons is me btw”
What a guy! I don’t think he realizes he comes off a bit arrogant. I guarantee you if you ask him he’ll tell you he is a very humble guy.
It’s more of the fact that English isn’t his native tongue rather than a brag tbh.
