Mathys Tel

Think we should come in and make an offer now. Just … do anything…

He’d be on our list for left-sided wingers as a long-term replacement for Trossard, perfect age really. High ceiling. Can play anywhere across the front.

On the downside, he’s not had much game-time and likely won’t hit the ground running but you see players at this stage of their career really take off with a bit more regular football. See Nwaneri, Saka and MLS for details. It’s still a risk but better than stuffing-up our summer budget to get a fairly good but 29 year old striker.

If he’s not going to affect summer business because he was at or near the top of our list of targets, then pull the trigger now.

I personally prefer this to Watkins.

Hang on, this would be low risk if it was a deal with no commitment of making it permanent.
As of now, the only team that agreed a deal with him was Tottenham and they were gonna pay 60m for him.
That would certainly not be a low risk move.
Out of us, Man Utd, Chelsea and Villa, we’re probably the team that can guarantee him the least amount of minutes.

Why can’t we guarantee him minutes? Our left wingers have been largely shite and so has our striker.

Chelsea have 600 wingers already, we’re at least better off than them.

I think it’s a far better use of £60m when we’re looking for a left winger in the summer anyway. It’s not much more than the going rate for a squad player in the EPL.

As proven by our bid for Watkins.

I agree a loan with optional fee would be the safest bet but would Bayern sanction it? If it turns out we’ve already identified him as a target and Arteta thinks it’s a good deal, I’m happy for the club to buy him.

Yeah, I think we’re an attractive option if he wants a permanent move or a loan with option/obligation is on the table. I don’t see Arteta being very interested in just a dry loan. For a loan deal he’d almost certainly want somebody more experienced and ready to contribute immediately.

Chelsea have more options up front than us plus they’re playing in the Conference League so there’s a good chance Tel’s minutes are in that competition. Guys like Nkunku and Felix can’t get minutes and want out, its not like he is going to walk in and start playing.

At Villa he’d just inherit Duran’s situation as he isn’t displacing Watkins and Emery doesn’t play with a left winger like him, he seems to like a midfielder there like Ramsey, Rogers, or McGinn.

United who knows, he’s probably most natural as a CF there rather than one of the positions behind the striker. Their CFs are crap but there are two of them and I doubt Tel will just walk into the team as a 19-year-old joining midseason. United is also where young players’ careers have gone to die for the last decade, he’d be kind of mad to pick them unless its just a dry loan and back to Bayern situation.

At Arsenal he knows he would be the backup CF and compete for LW minutes for a team still in two major competitions that will need to rotate quite a bit. And that both the CF and LW starting roles are up for grabs over the next couple years and he’ll be given every chance to stake a claim.

God awful window

While none of them have been great, I wouldn’t say they’ve been shite. Do you think he comes in and simply takes their starting spot? I highly doubt it.

He’s probably gonna get some more sub appearances than he was at Bayern, perhaps another start or two if he does well while rotating, but that’s it.

We’re out of the FA Cup, up to two matches left in the League Cup, Mikel ain’t gonna fuck around in the CL from this point onwards and our backs are against the wall in the PL.

Our backs being against the wall is potentially an advantage for him, as there’s a decent chance that come April we’re basically out of the title race but with top four locked up and looking to rotate heavily in the league to prioritize our CL campaign.

A lot really comes down to whether he is looking to make a permanent move now. We may not offer as much playing time in the next four months as another club, and if all he wants is to play a bit and then go back to Bayern then he might not like that option. But he’ll be hard pressed to find another big club where there is much future playing time at either CF or LW available if he can take his chance. Jesus is done, Trossard is likely on the way out, Sterling definitely on the way out. We’ve got one CF (Kai) and one LW (Martinelli) that we’re planning around and neither of them have been able to convincingly nail down a starting spot so far in their time at the club.

Yep, except everyone got milked for a guy that intended to stay lol.

Close the window. Shut it down.

That’s what he told Tottenham, according to Tottenham I would assume.

“It’s not you it’s me.” I’ve heard that before, unfortunately.

This guy says its Arsenal, United, or staying at Bayern.

Some of our best signings were courted by Spurs first.

So is what Ornstein is reporting the excuse he gave Spurs for rejecting them?

Kid should probably take the hint and leave Bayern. Clearly he’s not someone they value long-term anymore. It ain’t just the fact that he’s barely playing there and that they agreed a permanent sale for him, it’s the fact that they’re already looking at players that would continue limiting his minutes there.

Think he’s explosive. Maybe defensively he isn’t what Mikel wants? Going into next year with Saka and Nwaneri on the right and Martinelli or Tel on the left makes our forward line dynamic and exiting again. Jesus and Trossard probably will not be here next year.

Then Havertz and Watkins fighting it out upfront.

Where do people stand on Tel as an option over Nico Williams?

I’m happy with either. Tel will not take up so much of our salary budget, I’m always a little skeptical of the intentions of players coming in on the very high wages Williams will demand.

Sometimes it ends badly and I’m not a risk-taker. But hey, not my money and he’s a bit better than Tel at the moment.

I didn’t even consider the salary. Interesting point.

A lot more noise surrounding United than us. They’re a noisy club but I wonder whether we’re really involved here or our name is just being thrown around.
