Since this is happening, So here is my best shot to delicately backtrack.
My fear is still there.
With Henry, Vieira, Sanchez etc. The writing on the wall was already before the transfer window began and they had their mind set to start a new chapter with a new club.
But with Odegaard & Ozil, the situation is different where they really wanted to stick around but then realized they have to leave.
For someone with fragile motivation, it can act as a deterrent. I hope he can keep his focus on building his career up with us regardless of lack of europe or our ups & downs.
Ability wise there is no doubt he is an excellent prospect with high ceiling. I enjoyed his involvement last season and only an injury took away his momentum.
I understand the broader point that you are making here.
However, the clubs that you site in the examples have a lot less holes in their lineup than Arsenal. So, clubs doing less transfers (while still being title contenders) isn’t the best barometer to use right now for a club that is right back where they finished the season (plus White).
Let’s hope he improves with being more ‘settled’ and being an official player rather than a loan geezer helping us out.
Wasn’t particularly impressed but it’s a much better deal than Maddison at 60m so in typical Arsenal fashion, they’ve made me somehow accept this as the lesser of two evils.
Just pray he turns out good and that we still are in the market for a CM (think that died with Xhaka deal).
Tbh if he turns out class for 2 years and they buy him back for 60m+ do we really mind? It’s still 30m profit which is what we need to be doing on a few deals to get us back to where we need to be.
We’ll never get the Coutinho type deal but if we double our money by taking a chance on players then we need to. Much more in favour of looking for Martinelli’s than Pepe’s and Aubameyang’s given where we are as a club.
Thinking of it, a midfield of Odegaard, Partey and Lokonga would be quite good. But then our boy Mikel will push Auba onto the left flank to accomodate Laca through the middle, and things will still not change very much in the grander scheme of things. Regardless, hope Odegaard can hit the next level for us soon. Really need someone who can add a spark to this team and may be take us to 5th/6th atleast.
Odegaard arriving did allow for Auba to be used centrally.
Mikel seemed to really fancy ESR-Odegaard-Saka behind Auba until Auba missed the NLD and then got sick.
