We tried to defend a one goal lead at Anfield for an entire half ffs. Should’ve been a bit more active via counter attacking atleast. A two goal lead and we’d be looking at things a bit differently right now.
That’s probably fair
We were under pressure and couldn’t get out anymore
If anything Arteta’s poor sub decisions cost us
He could have brought in Jorginho to help control midfield, we were completely overran in midfield
Instead he brought in Kiwior who hardly played a game and the poor lad didn’t have a clue what was going on being thrown into such a frantic game
Do people think that Saliba was a big miss and if he had played we could have taken all 3 points ?!
Yrs
I know a point from Anfield is still a decent result, but having been 0-2 up and so much in control in the first half, it’s still triggering me a bit more than it should lol
I think the biggest issue with Saliba missing is the lack of cohesion in defence at times. Saliba is in the same wavelength as White, Gabriel, Partey and Zinchenko.
Far too often I’ve seen Holding get dragged by someone and leaving big gaps that get exploited. In general the defence is not as organized. Not to say it was perfect before but there is certainly more chemistry in the team with Saliba.
Btw, I know he’s had some bad moments recently but this is a game Tomiyasu would have thrived in. Had he been available I reckon he would’ve been involved. Kept Salah silent at the Emirates earlier in the season.
Not if we surrendered midfield like that and didn’t work hard enough as a unit.
Was a strange game… you felt there were goals in it and when we went 2-0 I think we sat back more and it suited giving Pool more time and confidence… they have fucking dangerous attackers and you just can’t give them hope… hard to second guess, but frankly in the end we were probably fortunate to come out with a draw.
Feel free to ignore, but the xg stats tell an ugly story in terms of chances conceded, including a missed pen obviously… they were at 4.64 to 1.54 in xg game, so could very much argue we were fortunate.
Yep, the sober assessment this morning from me is “Jeez that was close”. I hope this gives the team and the manager a kick up the arse that can be needed in title run-ins. Both City and Arsenal will drop more points.
I don’t buy all this “handing it to Man City” crap in the press.
I don’t buy it, either. We all know these hacks are waiting to pounce on The Arsenal.
Gary Neville said on his sky sports podcast that in the 15 years he came to Anfield as a player they never played as well as that first half as Arsenal did.
Tbf to him he also said that is a great point for Arsenal as even though we were 2-0 up a point for Arsenal is a great result as Liverpool away is a different ball game specially in the second half when Liverpool are attacking the kop
He also said it’s the start of our collapse and united are closing in now.
Closing in on what exactly? We’re almost 20 points apart…
Mikel should just take all the shit being said by all the pundits on various platforms about Xhaka, about how we’ve handed the title to City etc. and use that to stir this team up for the remaining games.
As for Gary Neville, someone needs to remind him how many goals United conceded against Liverpool. They might go another 10 years without winning the title but the smugness will die hard in people like Neville and Alex Crook.
Feels a lot like England the last few tournaments where people have been desperate for them to fail and got their wish. I feel like history is about to repeat itself, which is gonna be tough to take after we’ve made it this far in the title race.
I agree with the sentiment that Mikel cost us that game, not any individual player. The Kiwor sub was just stupid… honestly he should never have been brought on as a sub, it completely killed our game.
The kid isn’t ready for the EPL, not even as a sub. He really needs to be loaned out for a year or two. He’s by no means the reason why we dropped points, but the gulf in quality between our first 11 and our bench is a big concern.
Honestly, I really wanted us to go gung-ho, even when 2-nil up. I wanted to see Jesus, Saka, Martinelli & Trossard causing them problems in the 2nd half. The fact, that we just decided to sit back… was suicide.
Could’ve easily cost us the game and the title with those substitutions had we lost.
See I don’t think we did decide to sit back. We allowed ourselves to be over run and stopped competing for second balls.
I have no issue if you want to park the bus, but you have to man mark and play as a unit.
We got caught between two stools and hoped for a breakaway goal but we didn’t ever in the second half once have a spell of frustrating them.
Finally read through the whole thread, I just couldn’t cope with doing it for the last couple of days.
Arsenal haven’t earned it…
I have had a real dichotomy with Arsenal this season. On one hand, you have a pretty well run club that (finally) decided to give a manager enough time to see his vision through, and on top of that, there are some young, talented players coming through and playing an integral part in the club’s success this season. All of these are good positive things. However, as a Liverpool fan that saw my club get 95+ points in three seasons and only win the title once, it rankles in an admittedly petty way that Arsenal’s first decent season in a decade might see them win the league. It’s not that I want Man City to win it – I’m not getting into the dubious debate about where their funding comes from, but it’s their victim mentality nonsense that comes out every time they get charged with FFP infractions because everyone knows they have been taking the piss there – but I can’t get past the feeling that Arsenal just haven’t earned it properly.
I am not seeking to defend this opinion because I know how flawed and childish it is.
However, having seen them practice the, sigh, “dark arts” like they did on Sunday, killing any momentum that Liverpool were trying to build up by faking injuries etc, and for it to be such a distinct game plan, well, I can’t get past this. It insults the game, the fans, and abuses the rules that we have in place to protect players from actual injuries. I don’t remember seeing anything like that since uber cheat Jose Mourinho was at Chelsea the first time around. It was shit then, and it’s shit now.
So fuck Arsenal.
